DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s is thrilled to welcome Colin Gawel as our November happy hour residency every Friday night on Charlie’s Stage! \nAbout Colin Gawel… \n“I wrote my first song on the back of a paper route book in 6th grade.” – Colin Gawel \nSoon after\, while seeing a Cheap Trick concert\, I convinced my pal Joe Oestreich that we should start a band and get signed to Epic Records. Just like Cheap Trick did. Watershed was born at that moment of the bus ride home from the show. Once we learned how to play\, we did get signed to Epic Records and do damn near every single thing a rock n roll band can do. Except have a hit song. It’s quite a tale.   \nIn fact\, you can read all about it in the best selling memoir “Hitless Wonder- A Life in Minor League Rock n Roll” which was released in 2012 and National Public Radio called it one of the two best books of the summer. It rose to #1 on the Amazon music book charts. (!) As of 2022\, Watershed is still recording and playing shows. \n In the meantime\, I also record and perform as a solo artist. Superior- The Best of Colin Gawel is 17 seventeen song compilation of that work. And in 2018 I released the League Bowlers Some Balls Deluxe. The Bowlers play bottom shelf versions of top shelf rock n roll\, both originals and tasty bar room versions of the classics. Laced with pedal steel\, Telecaster twang\, and Gibson grit\, the album embraces the grey areas between genre and generation\, with Perley breathing new life into her 1960s and ’70s influences. Recorded in her native Ohio\, Turn Me Loose finds Perley building a dreamy world of her own\, writing sharply-detailed songs filled with small towns\, big cities\, and foggy nights pierced by her car’s high-beams.  \n“Plug me in\, turn me loose\,” she sings during the album’s opening track\, which unfolds like a mission statement from a road warrior who’s hungry to hit the highway again. It rose to #1 on the Amazon music book charts. (!) As of 2022\, Watershed is still recording and playing shows. \n In the meantime\, I also record and perform as a solo artist. DESCRIPTION:Endings are messy. Falling in love is messy. Change is messy. Perhaps\, change is the messiest of them all. Especially when eyes are on you; when you blast out of adolescence onto stages across the country\, then into your twenties\, onto more stages and\, finally\, into your thirties—all on those same stages. The stages that Lydia Loveless has sung her heart out on\, has collapsed on\, and laughed on\, all mirror the stages of her life thus far for the world to see. When Loveless released her first album over a decade ago\, she was still a teenager whose songs of debauchery\, guzzling alcohol and doing cocaine were an audio wet dream for a certain type of listener who not only wear their music tastes on their (tattooed) sleeve\, but in the lifestyle that they emulate: “outlaw” music with brains – akin to Steve Earle\, Drive-By Truckers and Lucinda Williams\, vintage country heart with a heartland rock soul.    \nIn the end\, the music industry is still sadly a man’s world and\, as such\, Loveless grew up in the spotlight (or perhaps\, more accurately\, the bar lights) while she was placed on a pedestal. Her voicemail greeting is a tongue-in-cheek ode to this: “Hi\, this is Lydia Loveless\, savior of cowpunk. Please leave a message and I will get back to you.”  \nThe time between their late adolescence to now is defined by a shelf full of records\, hundreds of thousands of miles on the road\, and a ribbon of heartbreaks pockmarking their trail. Loveless is a fiercely brave writer who bluntly assesses their life in song: their struggles with alcohol and depression\, and the uncertainty of not only the future\, but what piecing together the past will mean for the present.  \nIn 2020\, they put out their excellent fourth full-length Daughter on their own label\, Honey\, You’re Gonna Be Late Records\, with encouragement from their friend Jason Isbell\, but could not tour behind it; the one consistent throughline in Loveless’ life was impossible due to the pandemic. They were living in North Carolina with their boyfriend at the time\, stuck\, away from the stages they grew up on\, isolated from their family\, and going stir-crazy. As the world came undone and then back together again\, Loveless returned to Columbus\, where their career first began. Starting anew\, Loveless found part-time work at a recording studio (Secret Studios) and began processing the last two years of their life. The title of their new album\, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again\, came easy—like a mantra from the heavens.   \nNothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again continues the evolution of Loveless. The artist who once sang that she would rather stay home and drink gallons of wine is now on the other end of the bottle\, where a bit of resignation resides. She sings on “Feel”: “I’m getting older and my jets are starting to cool\, if I ever get sober it’s really over for you fools.” Though a melancholic weight rests on the record—as it was written after the breakup with her longtime boyfriend and following a period of isolation and depression during the pandemic—it also feels like a triumphant moment from an artist who’s continuing her stride. Loveless has always been a brutally honest songwriter\, one whose articulation of love\, heartbreak and bad habits is wrapped not only in catchy melodies but also her finesse with words. \nNothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again musically retains the spirit of Loveless’ previous records\, but also moves past the chunky drunk and almost out-of-control riffing of their earliest work. Present here is something more akin to Rumors and Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac—and it works incredibly well. Their voice is more controlled and wiser. Although the subject matter that they are mining is\, at times\, desolate\, they mask it with the smoother production. It’s as beautiful and tragic as a woman crying in the rain\, with make-up streaming down her cheeks: at once real and mesmerizing. \nGently crushing standout “Runaway” opens with a floating piano chord\, slowly building with detailed\, multifaceted flourishes to a memorable chorus: “I don’t like to run\, I just like to run away.” It’s a stunning showcase of Loveless’ powerhouse vocals and heart-wrenching lyricism. On “Toothache\,” she sings about the mundanity of daily life feeling catastrophic enough to precipitate a breakdown\, as kinetic\, dynamic arrangements add to the track’s intense and claustrophobic mood. Album highlight “Sex and Money” was made for driving with the windows down on a sunny summer day\, and Loveless’ wry and self-deprecating sense of humor sparkles: “I know I’m not saving the world / But I gotta live in it so I might as well splurge / On 200 cotton t-shirts with my face on the front.” “Poor Boy” recalls the excitement\, energy and rebellion of bands like The Replacements\, but Loveless makes the mood her own with a subtle twang and a lot of vulnerability: “I need to clean up my mess and leave the poor boy alone.” \nNothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again is not only a break-up record drifting back to some of the best of its kind\, like Richard & Linda Thompson’s Shoot Out the Lights\, Superchunk’s Foolish and of course\, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors\, it’s also a reminder to keep improving oneself\, taking ownership and moving forward—alone\, if needed. Complex and captivating\, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again is a brave declaration from a person who has survived a lot. Here they lays bare not only their raw pain\, but also the strength and resiliency they’ve earned along the way\, that only Loveless could hold. \nReese McHenry opens for the show. \n \nReese McHenry came up swinging in Northern Minnesota and she didn’t sit still for very long. A true troubadour\, her powerful voice has driven her from the fresh greens of Eau Claire to the dusty motels of Albuquerque and everywhere in between. Since settling in North Carolina\, this prolific songwriter and jagged performer has lent her fire and talent to a number of recording projects and now turns her attention to her own damn show. Her songs defy genre and\, though one could still categorize them as straight-shooting “rock\,” the real thread connecting these songs is a wry brand of humor mixed with an ability to catch a hook at just the right moment. McHenry’s true signature\, of course\, is her emotive blues voice that can change at any moment from soft sweetness to a torrential downpour. DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s presents a special tribute to the music and life of John Hartford\, featuring the band Appalachian Swing\, talented musician Rick Good\, and multi-instrumentalist Paul Brown. Hartford was one of the most influential and widely loved musicians of the 20th century\, and this annual celebration helps to keep his legacy alive. \nAppalachian Swing is an exciting band featuring Adam Schlenker (guitar)\, Hayes Griffin (Mandolin)\, Todd Sams (banjo) and George Welling (bass) that is building its sound around the Kentucky Colonels brand of bluegrass and has wowed area audiences with their energy and amazing musicianship. Adam is an educator\, performer\, composer and arranger of Acoustic American Roots Music\, and has been featured in and contributed to Flat Picking Guitar Magazine and is the Coordinator of American Roots Music Studies at Denison University. Hayes is a multi-instrumentalist and music educator who has over a decade’s worth of experience touring with acts like Canadian fiddler April Verch and progressive bluegrass band Newtown\, whose album Harlan Road featured Griffin’s guitar work and debuted at #8 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts.  \nRick Good was a founding member of the notorious Hotmud Family and a co-director and performer with Rhythm in Shoes for twenty-three years. Rick received the 2010 Ohio Heritage Fellow\, an award which honored his 40 year career as a musician\, actor\, writer\, educator and advocate of America’s musical roots. He is recognized and respected for his accomplished banjo playing\, heartfelt singing and crafty songwriting.  Rick also performed regularly with the Red Clay Ramblers\, and currently can be seen with the Dayton based band The Elements. \nPaul Brown has been performing for over four decades and recently formed his new band “Hillbilly Chic”. According to Paul\, he began his musical journey on the streets of Lancaster\, Ohio\, busking for drinking money at the age of 9.  He offered himself as a human sacrifice to Sam Bush and Stewart Duncan at the age of 15 and has had only a few regrets about it.  After a brief stint in prison\, where he wrote children’s books about pet vivisection\, Paul joined a Tantric bluegrass cult.  Penning hits such as “Little Buddhist Shrine on the Hill”\, “The Ballad of Swami Yogananda” and “My Himalayan Cabin Home”\, Paul has been well tolerated in the southern Ohio music scene.  Primarily playing banjo and fiddle\, he has been described as “like John Hartford\, but without the talent”. He currently wanders the hills around Chillicothe\, Ohio with his wife and three cats named “Banjo”.  \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n

As a companion to the popular Trad Nua Celtic Concert Series at Natalie’s\, Trad Nua Folk Club Night strives to create an evening of Irish and Celtic music in a casual\, “folk club vibe” setting.  Hosted and anchored by acclaimed Irish musicians Mick Broderick and Randy Clepper\, Folk Club Night will feature a rotating lineup including some of the finest players and singers in the Midwest as well as occasional traveling musicians from Ireland. \nJoin Mick\, Randy and Sandy Jones for an exciting mix of traditional tunes and songs. From Dublin\, Ireland\, to Dublin\, Ohio\, Mick Broderick is the renowned bouzouki-player of the Irish supergroup Slide\, also the Noble Call\, and Dave Curley & Mick Broderick.  Columbus-based Randy Clepper is an acclaimed player of the Irish bouzouki\, also tenor banjo\, fingerstyle guitar\, and hammered dulcimer.  Sandy Jones\, fiddle\, has toured with the House Band (Ged Foley\, John Skelton\, Bernie Nau) and is a stalwart\, in-demand fleadh (Irish traditional music and dance event) performer across the Midwest. \nThe Trad Nua Celtic Series at Natalie’s is hosted by acclaimed Irish musicians Randy Clepper and Mick Broderick. DESCRIPTION:John Hurlbut of The Swimmers and The Hurling Stones\, and manager of the Fur Peace Ranch\, plays guitar and handles vocals\, with Mark Allen (bass) and Drew Racevskis (guitar) also contributing vocals. Blue Drew and Mark were founding members of Local Color\, and The Mad Habaneros. Rockin’ Louis Schocken of Strangely Enough (and a healthy dose of other bands) provides the rhythms on cajon and percussion. The eclectic mix of instrumentation and team chemistry makes for unique\, fascinating\, and tasteful song interpretations.\n\nHurling Habaneros is an organic outgrowth of the genuine friendships and musical experiences its members have shared through the years. The band will be playing selections from John’s recent hit releases of Vols 1 and 2 of “The River Flows” (recorded with Rock Hall of Fame inductee Jorma Kaukonen) as well as other old chestnuts and a sprinkling of original material as well. This one will bring the heat!  \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. DESCRIPTION:Brazilian ensemble featuring Musica Popular Brasileira featuring compositions of Jobim\, Djavan\, Donato and more \nKelly Crum Delaveris has been singing professionally since 1978\, inspired by her father’s collection of big band singers and Sergio Mendes recordings. She has performed with a variety of instrumentation\, from a duo to a symphony\, and is a frequent guest of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Kelly is a fan-favorite among local Columbus jazz fans. John Petric of the Columbus Dispatch\, compliments “…her rapid-fire phrasing\, practically turning the lyrics into liquid sounds. Amazing.” She has opened for Sarah Vaughn\, Bob James\, Bob Newhart\, Joan Rivers\, Tito Puente\, Tony Bennett and many more. DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s Grandview presents Donna Mogavero on Charlie’s Stage as our December happening hour residency every Friday.. For this show\, there will be no admission charge\, but tips are greatly appreciated.  \nDonna Mogavero is a singer/songwriter and professional entertainer. Donnas’ musical recognition of 30+ years began in high school. In the early ‘90’s she was recognized and awarded several Columbus Music Awards in categories of outstanding rock and folk vocalist\, artist deserving higher recognition\, acoustic solo performer and recording artist. \n In the late 1990’s she wrote The Streets Where I Live. This song gave the listener a vivid description of what life looked and felt like in what is now known as “the art district” called The Short North before renovation of the area in early 2000. Shortly after that\, with a little tweaking the song was used by Experience Columbus to promote and market Columbus\, Ohio. She was the first woman Grand Marshall in 2015 for Columbus’s Italian Festival. She had her own Sunday Radio Show called the Acoustic Coffee House on Cd(101) now 92.9 from 1991-’95 and 1998-2000. \nShe recently released her long awaited fourth original Cd The End Of the Drive\,  a compilation of songs that tell many stories flavored in rock\, country\, folk yet signature Donna Mogavero style.
