DESCRIPTION: Like only the most insightful songwriters\, Austin Plaine draws intense emotion from the subtlest moments. On his sophomore album Stratford\, the Minnesota-bred\, Nashville-based musician shapes his lyrical storytelling with both precision and pure feeling\, capturing every nuance of lost love and longing and fractured innocence. And while Stratford is steeped in a warm nostalgia\, Plaine instills each song with a quiet optimism that speaks to bravely moving forward\, even in troubled times.\n\nProduced by Jay Foote and mixed by Steve Vealey (M. Ward\, Phoenix\, Hurray for the Riff Raff) at the legendary Electric Lady Studios\, Stratford arrives as the follow-up to Plaine’s self-titled debut—a 2015 release that earned comparisons to Bob Dylan and Conor Oberst from Baeble Music. In a departure from that more stripped-down effort\, Plaine assembled a full-fledged band who recorded in an apartment in Brooklyn\, infusing Stratford with a homegrown feel and loose yet kinetic energy. \nTaking its title from the Flatbush street where the album came to life\, Stratford offers a classically arranged take on folk-rock that illuminates the intimacy of Plaine’s vocal work and the graceful candor of his lyrics. From track to track\, the 27-year-old singer/guitarist reveals a refined sense of songcraft that he partly credits to moving to Nashville from his hometown of Minneapolis in early 2017. “Being part of a whole community of songwriters\, you realize there’s a lot of different directions you can take a song\,” he says. “It’s really opened me up as a writer\, and it’s also helped me to hone in on every word of every line that I write.” \nWith its abundance of indelible images—night trains and the Northern Lights\, backyard camping and drive-in romance—Stratford also bears a richness of detail that hints at the literary and cinematic influence behind Plaine’s songwriting. “People tend to think my songs are personal because I sing in the first person\, but often it’s very observational for me\,” says Plaine\, who names Alexandre Dumas and Henry Miller among his inspirations. “I’m learning to understand new philosophies of life\, love\, and death”\, attributing his passion for reading has helped him attain a better sense of his surroundings. \nProving the emotional depth of Plaine’s artistry\, Stratford opens with the wistful reminiscence of “Something More” (a steel-guitar-laced track “like a movie I’ve seen before / way back when / we were something more” sings Plaine in the chorus)\, then slips into the bittersweet\, burned-but-not-broken ache of “What Kind of Fool” (a rollicking\, country-tinged number co-written with Sixpence None the Richer’s Leigh Nash and Stephen Wilson). Later\, on “Lucky Ones”\, Plaine presents a more hopeful portrait unconditional love\, with singer/songwriter Soren Bryce lending her vocals to the chorus’s bright and beautiful harmonies. \n \nMichael Dunton\, known professionally as M.Dunton\, is a singer-songwriter and guitarist out of East Nashville\, TN. His work combines flavors of indie rock and alt-country\, with a unique and timeless approach to songwriting that allows him to exist in a world of his own. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in Coeur d’Alene\, Idaho\, where he discovered two primary loves at an early age: music and running. He grew up running the trails of Northern Idaho with embryonic formations of songs in his head and spent his teenage summers working as a rafting guide in Missoula\, Montana\, where he was free to explore nature by day and write songs on the Lozeau Quartz trestle bridge by night. After graduating from Boise State University\, he left the Northwest for Nashville to pursue his passion for the guitar. While working as a hired gun guitarist\, he continues to create his own lane as an artist. “I write music to express sensations I cannot put into words\, arranged around songs that I can grow old with and sing forever.” He collaborated with Steven Cooper and Owen Beverly of Indianola on his debut releases\, including his 2023 Lonely Neighbors EP. Her combination of costume expertise\, consistent nod to history\, and classic dance and theatre background brings a captivating experience to her audience. She has shimmied across stages in NYC\, all around Ohio\, Indianapolis\, Memphis\, and even as far as Dublin and Cork\, Ireland. \n \nSince making her debut in San Diego in 2017\, Twirlisha Devine has performed\, featured\, headlined\, and competed all over the U.S. and internationally leaving a trail of glitter and fireworks wherever she goes. DESCRIPTION:After the success of her critically-acclaimed 2021 release Daddy’ s Country Gold\, Melissa Carper\, dubbed “HillBillie Holiday” by friend and collaborator Chris Scruggs\, was eager to get back in the studio. With co-producers Andrija Tokic (St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, Hurray For The Riff Raff) and Dennis Crouch (The Time Jumpers) behind the boards again at Tokic’s analog paradise The Bomb Shelter in Nashville\, Carper assembled that same crew of magical music makers — plus a few more — to embark on her newest effort\, Ramblin’ Soul\, set for release November 18th via Thirty Tigers.\nCarper’s deep\, old-timey music roots were firmly planted as a child\, playing upright bass and singing in her family’s traveling country band in rural Nebraska. Her love of country classics was cultivated as she laid beneath the console listening to her parents’ record collection. Hank Williams\, Patsy Cline\, Loretta Lynn\, Ray Charles\, Elvis Presley\, and more became the soundtrack of her youth. When Carper’s father gifted her a collection of Jimmie Rodgers’ recordings\, she began to find her voice and calling as a songwriter.\nCarper attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a music scholarship\, and spent much of her time in the music library\, instinctively drawn to the great jazz classics and jazz vocalists such as Billie Holiday\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Frank Sinatra\, and Nat King Cole. She also discovered Lead Belly\, uncovering a deep well within when singing his songs. Carper stands firmly on the shoulders of American ramblers\, crooners\, and songsters — the building blocks of her musical foundation. \nAfter two years of college\, wanderlust set in\, and Carper hit the road in the family’s 1980 Dodge Maxi Van\, and landed in historic Eureka Springs\, Arkansas. There\, she was welcomed into the busking community\, and found a new home base — a place to write\, reflect\, and rejuvenate in years to come. As she belted out the lyrics to “Ramblin’ Man” life began to imitate art. Carper put a few hundred thousand miles on her vans and pick-up trucks\, playing the streets and clubs of New Orleans\, Austin\, and even a stint in NYC as a founding member of The Maybelles. Magnetically pulled into the cultural heritage wherever she went\, she immersed herself in the music of those who sang on those same street corners\, and off the beaten path in times gone by. \nAlong the way\, she founded award-winning bands like power trio The Carper Family\, the perfect outlet for her unique skills and style. The band brought her original work to life in a simple yet dynamic fashion that also served her inspirations — country\, bluegrass\, western swing\, and old-style jazz\, playing festivals and shows across the globe\, and on shows like “A Prairie Home Companion.” Carper also holds a spot in award-winning Arkansas foursome Sad Daddy\, and founded roots duo Buffalo Gals with Sad Daddy bandmate and partner\, award-winning fiddler Rebecca Patek. \nIn 2020\, grappling with the loss of regular gigs\, Carper and Patek moved to a friend’s farm near Austin\, working in exchange for housing\, organic vegetables\, and fresh\, country air. The simpler life afforded Carper the space and rejuvenation needed to channel her muse\, and begin writing for her next album. \n“I had a handful of songs about rambling around and living a free life that I wanted to weave through the album\,” Carper recalls. “I wrote the title track driving back home to Texas\, and it felt like the seeds of the next album were planted. I also knew I wanted Ramblin’ Soul to have a different feel than Daddy’s Country Gold\, with more upbeat and diverse styles and grooves.”\nRamblin’ Soul features a co-write with life long ramblin’ buddy and bandmate Gina Gallina\, a song penned by friend and frequent collaborator Brennen Leigh; a reimagined classic from folk pioneer Odetta; and ten Carper originals. The album ventures into blues\, early rock and roll\, and old school soul\, along with Carper’s signature styles of country\, western swing\, and jazz. \nAlbum track “Ain’t a Day Goes By” breaks your heart\, then mends it again in the universal longing for a loved one now gone on. Backed up by Hammond B3 organ (John Pahmer)\, the emotion is punctuated by the gospel-style harmony stylings of Kyshona Armstrong\, Nickie Conley\, and Maureen Murphy. “1980 Dodge Van” heralds pulsing electric guitar and a grooving upright bass (Dennis Crouch) in an ode to the loyal family vehicle\, while “I Don’t Need to Cry” is a Patsy Cline-esque lament showcasing Carper’s classic country range and songwriting finesse. The upbeat\, tongue-in-cheek “Holding All The Cards” transports us to a smoky New Orleans speakeasy\, with wordplay\, honky tonk piano\, and playful clarinet\, while Carper pays an upbeat western swing tribute to her current home state in “Texas\, Texas. Texas.” \nCarper’s lifelong\, steadfast listening has come to fruition in the songs on Ramblin’ Soul. McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago\, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington\, Indiana.
