He spent a decade as a guitar-for-hire before picking up a mic to tell his own stories on the stage. \nSoulful and steady\, Graham’s music offers a raw introspective of the human condition that’s both painful and comforting. His guitar conveys heartbreak\, lyrics tell stories of regret\, but his rich vocal delivery offers the remedy. \nHaving brought his songs on international tours with both major label and indie acts\, Graham is challenging the notion of what it means to be a singer-songwriter. He’s driving inclusivity within the genre\, and he hopes to evoke a sense of understanding in the process.  \n“I’m writing about universal experiences\,” he says. “I’m writing music to connect my story to yours\, show you all that we have in common\, and maybe help both of us feel less alone.” \nGathering Stars open the show! \n \nGathering Stars is a band who makes beautiful\, powerful\, soulful music. With co-producers Andrija Tokic (St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, Hurray For The Riff Raff) and Dennis Crouch (The Time Jumpers) behind the boards again at Tokic’s analog paradise The Bomb Shelter in Nashville\, Carper assembled that same crew of magical music makers — plus a few more — to embark on her newest effort\, Ramblin’ Soul\, set for release November 18th via Thirty Tigers.\nCarper’s deep\, old-timey music roots were firmly planted as a child\, playing upright bass and singing in her family’s traveling country band in rural Nebraska. Her love of country classics was cultivated as she laid beneath the console listening to her parents’ record collection. Hank Williams\, Patsy Cline\, Loretta Lynn\, Ray Charles\, Elvis Presley\, and more became the soundtrack of her youth. When Carper’s father gifted her a collection of Jimmie Rodgers’ recordings\, she began to find her voice and calling as a songwriter.\nCarper attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a music scholarship\, and spent much of her time in the music library\, instinctively drawn to the great jazz classics and jazz vocalists such as Billie Holiday\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Frank Sinatra\, and Nat King Cole. She also discovered Lead Belly\, uncovering a deep well within when singing his songs. Carper stands firmly on the shoulders of American ramblers\, crooners\, and songsters — the building blocks of her musical foundation. \nAfter two years of college\, wanderlust set in\, and Carper hit the road in the family’s 1980 Dodge Maxi Van\, and landed in historic Eureka Springs\, Arkansas. There\, she was welcomed into the busking community\, and found a new home base — a place to write\, reflect\, and rejuvenate in years to come. As she belted out the lyrics to “Ramblin’ Man” life began to imitate art. Carper put a few hundred thousand miles on her vans and pick-up trucks\, playing the streets and clubs of New Orleans\, Austin\, and even a stint in NYC as a founding member of The Maybelles. Magnetically pulled into the cultural heritage wherever she went\, she immersed herself in the music of those who sang on those same street corners\, and off the beaten path in times gone by. \nAlong the way\, she founded award-winning bands like power trio The Carper Family\, the perfect outlet for her unique skills and style. The band brought her original work to life in a simple yet dynamic fashion that also served her inspirations — country\, bluegrass\, western swing\, and old-style jazz\, playing festivals and shows across the globe\, and on shows like “A Prairie Home Companion.” Carper also holds a spot in award-winning Arkansas foursome Sad Daddy\, and founded roots duo Buffalo Gals with Sad Daddy bandmate and partner\, award-winning fiddler Rebecca Patek. \nIn 2020\, grappling with the loss of regular gigs\, Carper and Patek moved to a friend’s farm near Austin\, working in exchange for housing\, organic vegetables\, and fresh\, country air. The simpler life afforded Carper the space and rejuvenation needed to channel her muse\, and begin writing for her next album. \n“I had a handful of songs about rambling around and living a free life that I wanted to weave through the album\,” Carper recalls. “I wrote the title track driving back home to Texas\, and it felt like the seeds of the next album were planted. I also knew I wanted Ramblin’ Soul to have a different feel than Daddy’s Country Gold\, with more upbeat and diverse styles and grooves.”\nRamblin’ Soul features a co-write with life long ramblin’ buddy and bandmate Gina Gallina\, a song penned by friend and frequent collaborator Brennen Leigh; a reimagined classic from folk pioneer Odetta; and ten Carper originals. The album ventures into blues\, early rock and roll\, and old school soul\, along with Carper’s signature styles of country\, western swing\, and jazz. \nAlbum track “Ain’t a Day Goes By” breaks your heart\, then mends it again in the universal longing for a loved one now gone on. Backed up by Hammond B3 organ (John Pahmer)\, the emotion is punctuated by the gospel-style harmony stylings of Kyshona Armstrong\, Nickie Conley\, and Maureen Murphy. “1980 Dodge Van” heralds pulsing electric guitar and a grooving upright bass (Dennis Crouch) in an ode to the loyal family vehicle\, while “I Don’t Need to Cry” is a Patsy Cline-esque lament showcasing Carper’s classic country range and songwriting finesse. The upbeat\, tongue-in-cheek “Holding All The Cards” transports us to a smoky New Orleans speakeasy\, with wordplay\, honky tonk piano\, and playful clarinet\, while Carper pays an upbeat western swing tribute to her current home state in “Texas\, Texas. Texas.” \nCarper’s lifelong\, steadfast listening has come to fruition in the songs on Ramblin’ Soul. Her childhood love of the family record collection planted the seeds of what is her own bountiful orchard today. \nWe will not be open during normal business hours for this show – ticket holders will be able to check in and the venue will open at the door time listed on this event page.  \nFood & Bar: Our full bar and a limited menu of pizza\, salads\, charcuterie\, and desserts will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/an-evening-with-melissa-carper/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Music Hall Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Music Hall Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Melissa-Carper-Natalies-Instagram-Graphic-2.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230924T193000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230924T193000 DTSTAMP:20240118T104401 CREATED:20230605T140058Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230907T221727Z UID:128565-1695583800-1695583800@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:James McMurtry w/ BettySoo - SOLD OUT! DESCRIPTION:In James McMurtry’s new effort\, The Horses and the Hounds\, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years\, due August 20 on New West Records\, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation ( closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record\,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.”\n\nThe Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (Ozzy Osbourne\, John Fogerty\, Van Halen\, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica\, California\, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory\, Coming Home (2006). McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago\, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington\, Indiana. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums\, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland\, for Columbia Records and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album\, Saint Mary of the Woods\, for Sugar Hill Records. With driving beats and room to breathe\, this project feels different from her previous endeavors. Albatross City has a stripped down simplicity to it that feels spacious and airy. Still with catchy hooks and memorable choruses –that Lydia is known for– the tone is a little more loose and upbeat than the Lydia Brownfield solo project. A little bluesy. Almost bluegrass. Lydia calls their sound swampy. Her electric guitar sings with confidence and her powerful voice reminds us she’s been doing this a while. Jeff Dalrymple\, Lydia’s trusted wingman\, powers the bass with a heavier hand than what we’re used to hearing from him on the acoustic guitar. And the addition of Ty Landrum on drums is significant. His passion and skill takes this already mighty duo up a giant leap with not only a solid foundation\, but also interesting rhythmic choices. \nVocal harmonies? Check! Wide ranging dynamics? Check! Great songs? Check! Listen for Albatross City on the Columbus airwaves\, and look for performances debuting in September 2023. \nKelly Vaughn \nWith a unique blend of folk and indie rock\, Kelly Vaughn’s songs tell a story. Soulful and transparent and written from the heart\, her songs speak to the struggle\, hopes\, and joy that we all experience. Kelly has performed at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has opened for national touring artists such as two time Grammy nominated Jennifer Knapp.  Interviewed twice to date on Good Day Columbus\, she was recently featured on “Slice of Life” with Adam Slinger (WSYX 6).  She has also been featured in the Lancaster Eagle Gazette\, and kicked off the Brickyard Stage Final Friday Concert Series in Mansfield five years in a row.  Her song “Ordinary Girl”\, from her debut EP (2014) was featured on local radio station CD 102.5 and she was highlighted on WGRN 94.1’s “The Music Room” with Rick Barr. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. And it’s mirrored by the integrity of his career.
The singer-songwriter has never been seduced by fame. His focus has always been on creating music that captivates the ear\, the mind and the heart.

Born Ian Matthews McDonald\, June 16\, 1946\, in Scunthorpe\, Lincolnshire\, England\, he soared to prominence in 1967\, as a founding member of Fairport Convention. In that pioneering band\, Matthews created exquisite harmonies with first Judy Dyble\, then Sandy Denny.
After two years\, he left and formed Matthews Southern Comfort. They enjoyed a huge hit with their stirring version of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock.”
One of the outstanding solo albums Matthews recorded during his years in Los Angeles was 1973’s “Valley Hi\,” produced by Michael Nesmith.
Matthews has fronted such bands as Plainsong\, Hi-Fi\, No Grey Faith\, More Than a Song and a Dutch jazz combo\, The Searing Quartet. After working for a while in A&R\, in 1987 Matthews returned to performing and recording as a solo artist for a time. Mostly based in Austin Texas. \nSince returning to live in Europe in 2000\, he focused again on his now all Dutch ensemble\, Matthews Southern Comfort and his seemingly never ending stream of solo recordings. Matthews latest album releases include “A BAKERS DOZEN”\, his most recent solo effort and “FAKE TAN”\, recorded in Norway two years ago\, with Norwegian icons\, The Salmon Smoker’s. A collaboration with British writer Ian Clayton in 2018 produced his highly praised memoirs\, “Thro my eyes”. Making several music book end of the year lists. \nThese days Matthews prefers to focus more on acoustic solo shows\, where he tells stories and plays many fan favorites from his 50 year career. He says\, “I have nothing more to prove and this approach to live shows gives me an instant rapport”. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. But tradition bearers came through and played in her living room\, with weekends spent at music festivals and house parties.  Evie’s performances\, recordings and teaching reconnect Appalachian music/dance with other African-Diaspora traditions\, and have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Lincoln Center\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Celtic Connections. Evie tours internationally with Keith Terry and her Evie Ladin Band; and has produced numerous albums and instructional DVDs.  \nAdam Schlenker & Hayes Griffin Duo \n \nEvery once in a while musicians find themselves in a pairing that is greater than the sum of its parts and this is certainly true for Adam Schlenker and Hayes Griffin. Geography kept the duo from working together regularly for several years but 2021 brought Hayes Griffin back to central Ohio and brought the pairing back to life. They quickly began exploring sounds through the American Roots Recap Concert Series where each concert reflects a different style or era in acoustic roots music. One sound that stood out to them was that of The Monroe Brothers and “brothers duos” of the 1930’s in general. Their latest album\, Long Journey Home not only celebrates the brother duo sound but also serves as the beginning of a new era for this duo. They set aside their original compositions for this project and focused on the standard material that helped shape the genre\, paying homage to their roots and setting the bar for projects moving forward. \nHayes Griffin is a multi-instrumentalist and music educator living in Grand Rapids\, MI. Griffin has over a decade’s worth of experience touring with acts like Canadian fiddler April Verch and progressive bluegrass band Newtown\, whose album Harlan Road featured Griffin’s guitar work and debuted at #8 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts. \nReleased in 2020\, “Midwestern Swing” is Griffin’s solo debut and delivers an aural cocktail inspired by the sounds of American country and swing music from the 1930’s\, 40s\, and 50s. Original tracks are set next to “deep cuts” from legendary songwriter/performer Cindy Walker\, Don Reno & Red Smiley\, Tom Delaney\, and Joe Gibson. \nHayes has also developed a presence in the mandolin community with his instructional content on YouTube\, including his weekly series on the electric mandolin playing of Tiny Moore. \nAdam Schlenker is an educator\, performer\, composer and arranger of Acoustic American Roots Music. He was born and raised in southern West Virginia\, and is currently based near Columbus Ohio. Along with performing\, recording and touring\, Adam founded 5th Fret Productions in 2009 combining online\, video based lessons with one on one instruction. He adopted online video conferencing early on as a teaching platform and now his private student base stretches across the US\, throughout Europe and Australia. With 6\,000+ followers and more than 1.2 million views on Youtube\, Adam’s approach to teaching and playing flat picking and Bluegrass guitar has influenced numerous players from all around the globe. He has been featured in and contributed to Flat Picking Guitar Magazine and is also an instructor at a number of music camps including the Nashville Flat Pick Camps and Perry Stenback International Guitar Camp (Denmark). \nIn 2018 Adam took on the role of Coordinator of American Roots & Bluegrass Music Studies at Denison University where he leads the Bluegrass Ensemble\, Teaches a Seminar Course on composing and arranging roots music\, teaches private lessons for guitar and mandolin as well as the History of Bluegrass & American Roots Music course. \nAdam strives to develop music that reflects his influences while attempting to keep the music moving forward. Paying homage to his predecessors like Norman Blake and John Hartford through his own compositions. This approach to making music\, innovation through tradition\, continues with his latest album\, The Ghost’s of Pain Creek. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Her music has straddled the folk\, americana and indie rock genres over the course of her 20 year career\, and over that time\, her bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth.\n\nChris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist and her flair as a lyricist have garnered her favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic\, she has shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers\, Gregory Alan Isakov\, The Cowboy Junkies\, Haley Heynderickx\, and Ani DiFranco. She has had her songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters\, Covert Affairs and Shameless and as well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film\, The Royal Road. Along the way\, Chris has remained truly independent\, selling nearly 50\,000 albums through her own label\, Sad Rabbit Records.\n\nKym Register (Of Meltdown Rodeo)\n\n\n\nInstagram | Facebook | Twitter\n\nKym Register + Meltdown Rodeo (formerly LOAMLANDS) is a transgressive and distorted country music outfit based in North Carolina that places queer storytelling at the forefront. Their music intimately grapples with identity\, retribution\, reconciliation and queer existence in both modern-day and historical (inclusive of mostly all) southern culture.\n\nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Reviewers and fans from around the world\, including Rolling Stone and The New York Times\, agree that Chris continues to be a profound songwriter\, a blistering guitarist\, and intense performer as he draws deeply from the blues\, American folk music\, modern poets and humanist philosophers.  \nHe may be best known for writing “Love You Like A Man” which Bonnie Raitt and\, more recently\, jazz great Diana Krall have covered.  His music has been covered by numerous artists\, including ‘Link Of Chain’\, a tribute album of Chris Smither originals featuring stellar versions by Dave Alvin\, Tim O’Brien\, Bonnie Raitt\, Josh Ritter\, Loudon Wainwright III\, Jorma Kaukonen\, Eilen Jewell\, Paul Cebar and others. \nMore From The Levee is the 18th album from Smither and is a brilliant continuation of his 50 year retrospective album\, Still On The Levee (2014). What resulted were 24 fresh reimagined takes from Smithers vast career with help from some very special guests including the legendary Allen Toussaint and Loudon Wainwright III. With his fingers as supple as his voice\, Smither effortlessly delivered the other half of his signature sound on Still on the Levee: the back porch feel of intricate acoustic blues picking accompanied by his own boot heel on wood rhythms. \nTaking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest\,)\, the streets (and 45’s) of New Orleans\, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul\, funk & blues of his youth\, Paul Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture. His time spent in his second home of New Orleans\, as a musicologist in Florida\, and as a journeyman wanderer in Cuba\, is reflected in his musical worldview. \nAt the core is gifted songwriting\, and the company Paul keeps bears it out. Bonnie Raitt\, Nick Lowe\, Chris Smither\, John Hiatt and Cesar Rosas are among his friends and admirers. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show.
