And much like the artists who have influenced  him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly  his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and  renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. Born and raised in Maine\, Paul  attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open  mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the ear of  folk luminary Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album\, Stories.  \nHis songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and  have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a  steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring  presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Along the way\, he has  picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston  Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic  Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the  2019 NERFA Album of the Year.  \nHis new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided  political stances on his own imprint\, Rosella Records.  \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/ellis-paul-2/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/ellisrad.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240211 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240212 DTSTAMP:20240118T113408 CREATED:20230206T165148Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231219T151729Z UID:126935-1707609600-1707695999@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:CLOSED DESCRIPTION:We are closed today\, February 11th for a staff party. His bold approach to writing demonstrates a fearless approach to incorporating a wide range of inspirations while still respecting the deep traditions from which he draws. His songs possess great imagination and depth\, but a slight lean into the absurd and irreverent keeps them from the trap of over sentimentality. As a performer\, Chris’s unique voice and emotive guitar playing reach out and grab the listener by the heart\, leaving each listener with a sense of connection that transcends the singular moment. \nChris is returning to Natalie’s to showcase with a very special project. While touring in Chicago\, he met Ted Yoder. A few unforeseen circumstances led to the two of them playing together and unexpected sonic magic emerged as a result! He is excited to share the stage with Ted Yoder on the Music Hall stage. \nTed Yoder is a world-renowned musician\, known for his groundbreaking and innovative approach to the hammered dulcimer\, earning him the title “the Bela Fleck of the Hammered Dulcimer.”  \nIn 2016\, Ted gained widespread attention when his hammered dulcimer cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” became a viral sensation on Facebook\, amassing over 100 million views.  \nTed’s original compositions blend rock ‘n roll sensibilities and unmistakable innovation\, creating deeply moving and joyous music that captivates audiences. In a career that has already spanned a half-century\, Kaukonen has been one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music\, blues\, and Americana\, and at the forefront of popular rock-and-roll. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy nominee\, he is a founding member of two legendary bands\, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna. Jorma Kaukonen’s repertoire goes far beyond his involvement creating psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. \nBut performance and recording are only part of the story. As the leading practitioner and teacher of fingerstyle guitar\, Jorma and his wife Vanessa Lillian operate one of the world’s most unique centers for the study of guitar and other instruments. Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp is located on 125 acres of fields\, woods\, hills\, and streams in the Appalachian foothills of \nSoutheastern Ohio. Since it opened in 1998\, thousands of musicians whose skills range from basic to highly accomplished gather for weekends of master instruction offered by Jorma and other instructors who are leaders in their musical fields. \nAs Jorma’s former road manager and the only manager of his Fur Peach Ranch Guitar Camp\, John Hurlbut and Jorma have been friends since 1984\, and recently celebrated the release of their album The River Flows. Being close friends and neighbors allowed them to do a lot of picking and Jorma loves to step out of the spotlight to provide lead flourishes while backing up John’s signature vocal and rhythm guitar interpretations.  \nIn 2019 St. Martin’s Press published Jorma‘s autobiography\, Been So Long: My Life and Music\, written to express his life both in and out of the music world. As Kaukonen describes\, “My story is my story. Having told bits and pieces of it over my lifetime to a treasured few\, it was time to tell all to a bigger audience…From rehearsals and jams in small apartments and tiny back rooms to Monterey\, Woodstock\, Altamont\, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame\, the world of the Grammys and beyond… this is part of the road I live on. This is my embryonic journey and much\, much more!” \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Her craft in songwriting is the seedbed for intricate vocal arrangements\, creating a layered\, ethereal experience; one that translates dynamically from her albums to her live shows.  \n2022 saw the release of Victoria Victoria’s album\, To the Wayside\, which is a collaborative effort with guitarist and producer\, Charlie Hunter. “Writing these songs with Charlie was an otherworldly experience\,” says Elliott\, who engineered and produced her lead and background vocals in her home studio. “Arranging these songs for our live show was even more incredible.” Hunter and Elliott teamed up to write glossy anthems of self-acceptance such as Over My Shoulder and Move Right On\, and enticing tunes of invitation like Really Really and Keep Up.  \nJanuary of 2023 marked Victoria Victoria’s debut tour with Charlie Hunter on hybrid guitar\, her brother\, Noah Elliott on keys and vocals\, her dear friend and collaborator\, Maia Kamil on vocals\, and renowned Memphis drummer\, George Sluppik. The rhythm section makes for a sturdy foundation for transcendent vocal performances and inviting banter. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 36 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But his forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft.  \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.”  \nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley and Robert Hunter and George Jones and Elvis Costello and John Oates\,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.”  \nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.”  \nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again\,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship\, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn\, Lauderdale’s collaborative  \nspirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful\, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. “When everything works right\, it’s just magical to be able to hear them back\,” he says. “You feel\, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes\, like life makes sense.” \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/jim-lauderdale-solo/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Jim-Lauderdale-scaled.jpeg END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
