DESCRIPTION:“I try to take things I love and use them in a new way\,” said triple Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Peter Case of his 16th solo album Doctor Moan. Case brings his considerable songwriting ability to an 11-song collection\, largely performed on piano\, including his first solo recorded instrumental. Released by Sunset Blvd Records on March 31\, Case’s piano-based songs are emotionally\, sonically and stylistically rich. \nAs a founding member of the early punk era trio The Nerves\, in 1977 Case toured the nation sharing bills with the Ramones\, Mink DeVille\, Pere Ubu\, and Devo. The Nerves single “Hanging on the Telephone\,” was covered by Blondie. In 1979\, Case formed the Plimsouls\, a record-breaking live act in California\, recording albums for Planet/Elektra and Geffen. Their independent single\, “A Million Miles Away\,” entered the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard\, performed by bands around the world. The band performed in the cult classic film Valley Girl and the Nerves and Plimsouls timeless teenage rock ‘n’ roll continues to appeal to fans of each new generation. \nAfter the Plimsouls\, Case rediscovered his musical roots on his self-titled solo debut\, produced by T Bone Burnett. The New York Times declared Peter Case the best album of 1986. It earned a five-star Rolling Stone review and a Grammy nomination. Tom is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston. \nTokyo-born Hideyo Moriya began his guitar journey with surf music and British rock\, before relocating to Boston to study at Berklee. Hideyo is currently on hiatus from touring and lives in Chiba Japan. Lams\, Richards and Moriya felt the call to push themselves to the limit by enrolling in Robert Fripp’s challenging Guitar Craft courses\, where they first met in 1987. They went on to tour together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists\, before forming the California Guitar Trio in Los Angeles four years later. \nRecently\, the trio expanded its collaborative possibilities by working within a six-guitar format with the Montreal Guitar Trio. Even without Comhaltas\, conservatories\, or competitions\, 3 musicians in Central Ohio who had come to love Celtic music came together to form Fialla. Their abilities to pick up traditional instruments and play them with grace seemed to be steeped in their DNA. All multi-instrumentalists\, and one a dancer\, they present Celtic music so faithfully one thinks they hear the accents of the old country. Finding their footing in the local scene\, including performing at the Dublin Irish Festival\, the band has grown to be a first-class representative of Celtic music. Their selection of songs and tunes and the way they arrange the pieces has a freshness devoid of the usual stigma facing up-and-coming artists. Fialla finds songs that intrigue them\, and plays with them until they make them their own. DESCRIPTION:DAVE HAUSE’S SONGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ROOTED IN TANGIBLE REALITY—OF EMOTION\, OF ENVIRONMENT\, OF CIRCUMSTANCE.  \nSince releasing his debut album\, Resolutions\, in 2011\, the Philadelphia-born songwriter has poured his whole heart\, soul and life into his music. That’s no different on Drive It Like It’s Stolen\, his sixth full-length. Its 10 songs overflow with Hause’s trademark urgency and passion\, shimmering with a truth that reflects the harsh realities of life in this day and age\, as well the intermittent jolts of joy that punctuate it. After all\, his songs have always detailed his own personal traumas and triumphs within the setting of an unforgiving capitalist backdrop\, tethering those personal experiences to ineluctable external forces. 2013’s second album\, Devour\, for example\, was a response to his divorce from his first wife\, while 2019’s Kick saw him tackle hope\, depression\, global warming and a crumbling American democracy with the news that he was to become a father. Most recently\, on 2021’s Blood Harmony\, Hause wrote and sang about the positive impact of having twins\, and of the joy and excitement of being able to be at home with them for the first couple of years of the pandemic.  \n Drive It Like It’s Stolen is just as earnest and heartfelt\, raw and real as anything he’s ever written before. Yet there’s also a subtle yet significant difference—here he’s delving into a more fictional type of storytelling to create what he terms “post-apocalyptic Americana.” That’s clear from the title of this album’s haunting and ominous opening song\, “Cheap Seats (New Year’s Day\, NYC\, 2042)”. Set two decades in the future\, it’s obviously not about anything that’s actually happened\, but is still very much inspired by life. At the start of 2022\, Hause was in a good place. He’d changed his diet and had maintained a strenuous workout regimen resulting in improved physical and mental health. Feeling great\, he’d decided to go off Lexapro and left to go out on the Blood Harmony band touring.  \n “I was feeling great\,” he recalls. “I came back to work\, didn’t have my meds. But then I’m on tour\, I’m not working out\, I’m not eating that way anymore. And I’m really faced with the American city\, the American experiment post-pandemic. We’re going places and being like\, ‘Oh\, my God\, this is what Portland and San Francisco and Los Angeles look like.’ And it looked terrifying. Whenever I went anywhere\, I felt like I was watching the prequel to 12 Monkeys\, except I was also living it and just wondering what the fuck was going on. The tour was doing well\, but it just felt like my mental health was falling down stairs. A few months later\, when we were finishing the tour\, we heard stories that people were siphoning gas out of tour buses. So\, a lot of the record was kind of born of and trying to wrestle with that.” \n To that extent\, the future dystopia of “Cheap Seats” is very real—a vivid depiction of a society on the verge of collapse based on Hause’s experience as a touring musician and then filtered through his imagination. If “Cheap Seats” sets the tone with its dream of escape from a ravaged New York City\, then song “Pedal Down” starts that road trip. It’s a gloomy\, glowering\, dark early morning ride through desolate\, post-apocalyptic streets\, whose atmosphere really places you inside that car. A moody and monochrome song full of portent and hope in equal measure\, it’s both a literal journey—captured by the album’s striking cover\, which replicates the view of one of his twins in the back seat as the family drives away—and a metaphorical exploration of Hause’s fears and anxiety of being a parent in modern day America. ‘But we lead our lambs to slaughter\,” he sings. ‘It’s profit\, boot straps\, and guns/Every god needs a sacrifice/Honey\, what have we done?’ On one level it’s a simple question directed at his wife about having kids. On another\, it’s tackling the whole American system.  \n“Having children sounds like a great idea\,” he explains\, “and then you realize that they’re grist for the mill. They’re grist to be sold to\, they’re to be exploited\, and they’re potentially fodder for our passion for guns. If your god in America is the gun\, the idea that we must have these guns\, then gods need sacrifices and our children are those sacrifices. And you wonder\, ‘Did we bring children in this world to sacrifice them to the various American gods?’ That’s another thing we’re kind of grieving. We’re all complicit in this\, and we’re all potentially going to have to pay.”\n\nThe disturbing\, apocalyptic quasi-reality of the album’s lyrics is matched and amplified by the music. Written by Hause with his younger brother Tim\, Drive It Like It’s Stolen—just like the three that preceded it\, as well as Tim’s 2022 debut full-length—is the distinct next phase of their creative partnership. The third release on the brothers’ own Blood Harmony record label\, it shakes up expectations while at the same time building off the sound and reputation Hause has established for himself over the past decade or so. “Damn Personal”\, for example\, is a boisterous blue collar anthem about lost friends that’s charged with electric emotion\, while the uplifting\, Petty-esque “Hazard Lights” ruminates on Hause’s sobriety and the temptation that exists when he’s around friends who still imbibe. Yet though there’s a specificity to those lyrics\, they’re easily applicable to other situations\, too. \n“That feeling of having the hazard lights on\,” says Hause\, “it’s just uncertainty. I’m kind of just pulled over here—I don’t know where I’m going\, I know where I’ve been\, the hazard lights are blinking\, so please don’t hit me because I’ve got to figure out what to do next.”  \nElsewhere\, there’s “chainsaweyes” and “lashingout”\, two very halves of the same whole that once again merge personal anxieties with universal horrors. Both ask important questions about identity and parenthood and responsibility and the difficulties of raising children in America. The former is backed by dramatic strings that emphasize the importance of the subject matter\, while the latter begins as a beautifully poignant acoustic tune before descending into a marvelously unexpected piano breakdown that wouldn’t be out of place in a saloon sometime in the 1800s. Don’t be deceived by what Hause calls the “sugar” of that part\, though—there’s still an important message underpinning it. \n“Both those songs are trying to assess that angry\, always devouring\, youthful\, testosterone-fueled American boy thing\,” explains Hause. “Raising boys in America\, you don’t want to fall on the wrong side of history with that. In “lashingout”\, that person who sings ‘I want to be God for a day’ at the end could be a school shooter. That wish could be something that would prompt someone to do something terrible. Why would you want that power? You could really hurt people. But here’s the thing—we all feel like lashing out like that at points. But what is it that’s prompting this feeling that you want to change everything\, and do you have it right? Are you righteous in that anger of wanting to lash out?” \n Drive It Like It’s Stolen was engineered and mixed by David Axelrod\, and—like Blood Harmony—produced by Will Hoge and recorded at Santi Sound in Nashville\, though with a different set of musicians than that album’s all-star cast. Yet that’s not to the record’s detriment at all. On penultimate song “Tarnish”\, a song about both a life lived and one still being lived—past and present coalescing in a beautiful mesh of wistful self-reflection\, Hause sings ‘I never got a golden record/I guess the melodies were wrong.’ The performance and production of not just that song\, but this whole record\, proves that sentiment entirely wrong. It’s followed by “The Vulture”\, a song that harks back to the defiance that dominated Kick but which is recast with his children in mind. It feels\, too\, like the cementing of the thematic shift he’s making on this record. These songs may still be for Hause\, but they’re increasingly less about him. \n“My life is getting increasingly less interesting\,” he smiles. “And that’s by design. You want to be steady\, you want to be at a baseball practice or taking your kids to gymnastics or whatever it is. You don’t want to necessarily be staring into the abyss all the time and trying to determine your existential weight. I don’t want my life to become fodder for songs—I want my creativity to be the fodder for songs.” \nWith this particular car ride\, then\, Hause is en route to a whole new world. DESCRIPTION:Scott H. Biram\, a proud Texan raised on the outskirts of Austin\, is a  maverick in the tradition of Doug Sahm\, Roky Erickson (13th Floor  Elevators) and Gibby Haines (Butthole Surfers). Shortly after  releasing his third record (2003’s Lo-Fi Mojo)\, the 28-year-old’s life  was nearly cut short after a near-fatal head-on collision with a big rig semi. He was still bedridden when he made his Rehabilitation  Blues EP\, the predecessor to his 2005 debut for Bloodshot Records\,  The Dirty Old One Man Band.  \nFlash forward to 2022. After almost thirty years of tirelessly writing\,  recording and touring the front and backroads of America as a solo  bluesman\, collecting a wide array of critical accolades\, Biram found  himself suddenly stopped cold by the pandemic. Once again\, unwilling to allow outsized forces slow him down\, he took  advantage of the shutdown to write\, record and produce nine new  songs and two traditional covers for his new album\, The One & Only  Scott H. Biram\, his 13th overall and 9th for Bloodshot Records.   \n“I’m constantly trying to go back to the junky\, lo-fi sounds of my  early records\,” says Biram. “But it’s harder to do now. The more you  learn about production\, the harder it is to convey that genuine  unproduced feeling. I have to compromise between overproduced  and lo-fi\, so it sounds pro\, but still keeps that grittiness.”  \n“I tend to be all over the place. My brain’s restless. If something  interests me\, I’ll write a song about it. I have a kinda rootsy\, blue  collar approach with blues\, country and folk\, but I always throw in  \nsome of my heavier influences from metal and hard rock. I consider  myself a singer and guitarist\, above everything else.”  \nThe music on The One and Only Scott H. Biram has the down home\,  in-your-face feel that Biram is noted for. “No Man’s Land” opens  with a blues turnaround played on a twanging electric guitar\,  backed by a stomping bass and drum backbeat. Biram growls out a  lyric\, describing the hazards of growing up poor in a small Texas  town\, breathing the fumes from oil wells and brush fires. “I was  remembering a bumper sticker I saw as a kid that said\, ‘Oil Field  Trash and Proud of It!’”  \n“My music has a lot of aggression to it. I express myself without  holding back. If you mixed Muddy Waters\, Bill Monroe\, Jerry Reed\,  and Black Flag\, you’d have a good idea of my sound. It’s punk\, blues\,  country\, metal\, bluegrass and dirty.”  \n“Inside a Bar” captures the feel of an empty saloon on a slow  Monday night. It’s a straight-forward country blues\, with an  understated vocal\, intensified by an impressive solo\, that mimics the  tones of a pedal steel guitar. “I was going for the sound of loneliness  and alcoholism colliding.”  \nOther notable tracks include “Sinner’s Dinner\,” a rootsy rock tune  that gives us Biram’s take on the riot of January 6; “Dig a Hole/Big  Liar\,” a Chicago blues track with a shredding electric guitar solo that  zooms from speaker to speaker; a down and dirty southern gospel  style take on Leadbelly’s “Easy Rider\,” with a funky rhythm and  background whoops and hollers that suggest the reactions of a  packed Baptist tent revival\, and an acoustic take on “Death Has No  Mercy\,” the blues standard made popular by the Rev. Gary Davis. ;  \nThe most unexpected sound is “InterTransmissions\,” a short jarring  burst of noise\, feedback and sound effects. “I loved the Butthole  \nSurfers and a lot of psychedelic music when I was comin’ up\,” Biram  says. “I wanted to lean into that and add some color to the album. I  don’t think I’ll ever actually do it on stage\, unless I’m just pushing a  button on a sampler. Excessive loops and samples are not really my  go-to style.”  \nThe songs on the album deal with mortality\, romance\, religion\,  drinking and memories of the past\, but it’s difficult to identify an  overarching theme. “I studied art in college\, so I think of my albums  as collages. I grew up playing in punk\, metal\, blues\, country and  bluegrass bands\, so I throw in a bunch of stuff to see what resonates.  I’ll follow a heavy blues tune with a tender love song\, just the way  life is\, no one theme. I’m not tryna write a rock opera. Most of the  time\, I’m just getting’ shit off my chest.”    \nBiram’s albums and EPs are a separate entity from the sound he gets  on stage. “I have a wall of speakers behind me\, a big subwoofer\, old  beat up hollow-body guitars\, harmonicas\, and an amplified stomp  board to provide a heavy back beat. I sing in several different kinds  of voices and my solid sound really fills the room. I don’t use loops  but\, in the studio\, I sometimes overdub bass\, guitar\, drums\,  tambourine and percussion. Other times\, I dumb it down and just do  what I do on stage.”  \nBiram grew up in San Marcos\, Texas. “My dad played sax a little bit  around the house. My uncles played guitar together in a band. There  were always guitars and pianos around. I messed around with ‘em\,  but didn’t get serious about playing and songwriting until high  school. I sang and wrote lyrics in a punk-metal band. We played in  local bars for free beer\, and any attention we could get from the  local chicks. That was cool enough for us back then.   \n“My dad turned me on to Doc Watson and Leadbelly early on. I  inherited my great-grandfather’s banjo when I was 19\, and I started  \ndoing solo acoustic shows on the side. All that while I was still  rockin’ out in the punk band. Those acoustic shows morphed into a  bluegrass band\, but I still did solo stuff on the side\, stomping my foot  on the floor and developing a more aggressive guitar approach.  Sometime around 2000\, I realized I could consolidate the folk roots  with my heavier stuff and offer something that was truly my own.  The Scott H. Biram One Man Band was born.”  \n“I never liked being called a singer/songwriter\,” says Biram\, “but  those are some of my best qualities. I don’t want people to think I’m  a ‘fool on a stool\,’ which is what I imagine comes into people’s heads  when they hear ‘singer/songwriter.’  I try to steer clear of that\, when  I can.”  \nWith The One & Only Scott H. Biram\, the singer once again proves  himself to be an unstoppable force\, refusing to bow in the face of  outside challenges and demonstrating a unique ability to live up to  the traditions of rough-hewn\, individualistic Texas-born music. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Americana musicians Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams are a powerhouse of vocal and instrumental virtuosity. Initially Larry and Teresa made their marks separately – Larry as indispensable multi-instrumentalist with Bob Dylan\, kd lang\, Sheryl Crow\, Keith Richards\, Emmylou Harris and others\, and Teresa as a stage actor in productions like Keep On the Sunny Side where she portrayed Sara Carter and Always… Patsy Cline. Their performing partnership was molded recording and touring with Levon Helm\, iconic drummer and voice of The Band. \nThe couple’s albums\, 2015’s Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams and 2017’s Contraband Love opened doors and ears as they toured on their own and with Jackson Browne\, Phil Lesh & Friends\, John Prine and Little Feat. Mojo Magazine dubbed the pair “The first couple of Americana\,” and American Songwriter wrote: “they have created a unique sound inspired by the past\, that is spirited\, stirring and timeless.” In 2020 Larry & Teresa were profiled in the ten-part documentary series titled It Was the Music on Amazon Prime which gave viewers an intimate view of the realities of pursuing life as professional musicians. The set on the  upcoming dates will draw from all their albums and include unreleased new  material. \nIn recent years the Young Dubs have appeared twice on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel  Live\, had songs featured in TV shows (Sons Of Anarchy\, Human Target) and  toured extensively as a headliner and as the opener for such a diverse list of  artists as Collective Soul\, Jethro Tull\, Johnny Lang\, Los Lobos\, Chris Isaak and  many more. \nAlthough the Young Dubliners sound is most commonly called ‘Celtic Rock’\,  that label can often be misleading. The Irish influence is certainly there\, but  it’s not the only influence that bursts through on their albums or live shows. \nAfter all\, several of the band members have no Irish roots of any kind. “That  was always the idea”\, explains Roberts “The sound was intended to be a hybrid  because we all come from different backgrounds. Even though I am from  Ireland\, a lot of the music I listened to growing up wasn’t Irish at all\, but when  I got here\, I got homesick and developed a new appreciation for Irish Music.
