SUMMARY:The Suitcase Junket
DESCRIPTION:Matt Lorenz’s vision\, manifest in The Suitcase Junket\, developed in the tension between the grand and the solitary. Grand in its imagery\, sound\, and staging. Solitary in its thrift and self-reliance. What instruments he requires\, Lorenz builds from scratch and salvage. What parts five players would perform\, he performs alone. The spectacle of his one-man set bears constant comparison to legends of showmanship\, brilliance\, madness\, and invention. \nWhile audiences are captivated by his solitary form and the show itself\, Lorenz\, who homesteads with rescue dogs and chickens in rural Western Massachusetts\, is most serious about the songs. He has been building a catalog\, writing a world into existence. Solitary on stage and on the road\, his mind is crowded with characters\, narratives\, voices\, imagery\, sounds as wide and varied as mountain throat singers and roadhouse juke boxes\, plus newsreels of the planet’s destruction and salvage. \nWith his 2020 release\, The End is New\, Lorenz’s grand vision for the song overrides the how of it. The End is New is Lorenz’s sixth full-length album as The Suitcase Junket\, his first for Renew Records/BMG.  The sound has become more refined and deeper with each release. Lorenz tours extensively and plans to be back on the road for a waylaid release tour for The End is New in 2021. Lorenz is also a visual artist. In the early years he designed all The Suitcase Junket album art and merchandise and made the music videos generated with his songs. He continues to create the visuals for merchandise\, and to produce some of his videos\, now with collaborators. DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Eric Hutchinson is feeling nostalgic as he prepares to spend 2023 celebrating the 15th anniversary of his debut album\, Sounds Like This. “It’s a special record for me – one that changed my life\, my career\, and introduced my music to a new audience I could only have dreamt of\,” the Takoma Park\, MD native reflects. To commemorate the anniversary\, Eric has announced that he will be playing shows all year long\, performing the album in its entirety. He’s also revealed that Sounds Like This will finally be available on vinyl for the first time ever. Furthering the deep-dive into his past\, Eric will also release a new single\, “Sad Songs”\, a forgotten pop tune he wrote and performed regularly on tour in 2008 but never got the chance to record until now. \nToday\, Eric is a seasoned musician and touring artist who’s released eight albums\, performed in all 50 states and experimented with diverse kinds of musical genres like pop\, folk\, reggae\, alternative rock\, and jazz. Still\, more often than not\, Eric says if people are familiar with his music\, they know the songs from Sounds Like This. “I love getting to hear stories from so many people who remember growing up with the music\,” Eric says. “I’ll meet people and they’ll tell me about watching the music video for “Rock & Roll” on VH1 while getting ready for school\, or listening to “Food Chain” on a burned mix CD that an older sister made to celebrate getting her driver’s license\, or singing “Ok\, It’s Alright With Me” in their college a capella group. I’m proud of this album I made many years ago\, but I’m even more gratified by the part my music got to play in so many other people’s lives. DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from May 30th \nPopa Chubby\, born Ted Horowitz\, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 30 years. Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994\, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar\, and his tempestuous\, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head\, tattooed arms\, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy\, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters\, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson\,” Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre’s most popular figures. \nHis career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business\, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world\, where in many territories he is a star. A native New Yorker\, Horowitz’s first gigs were in the NYC punk scene as a guitarist for what he reflects was a “crazy Japanese special effects performance artist in a kimono called Screaming Mad George who had a horror-movie inspired show.” Right from the start he was immersed in rock ‘n’ roll as theater\, and learned from George and others playing CBGB’s at the time that included the Ramones\, the Cramps\, Richard Hell\, whose band\, the Voidoids he joined\, that rock ‘n’ roll should be dangerous. He reflects\, “Musicians like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols weren’t just bands. They were a threat to society.” \nThe Blues however was the foundation of his playing style. He recalls\, “Since I’d grown up on Hendrix\, Cream and Led Zeppelin\, when I started playing blues in New York clubs I understood that the blues should be dangerous\, too. It wasn’t just from playing in punk bands. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters were dangerous men. They’d cut or shoot you if they thought it was necessary\, and Little Walter packed a gun and wouldn’t hesitate to use it. That danger is a real part of the Blues and I keep it alive in my music.” \nPopa Chubby is his own man for better or worse. He reflects\, “I’m living in a wild time\, and that is where the inspiration is drawn from. There are my issues\, but the picture is much bigger than me and my situation. SUMMARY:5th Annual Kirk’s Concert with Grassinine - SOLD OUT!

DESCRIPTION:Endings are messy. Falling in love is messy. Change is messy. Perhaps\, change is the messiest of them all. Especially when eyes are on you; when you blast out of adolescence onto stages across the country\, then into your twenties\, onto more stages and\, finally\, into your thirties—all on those same stages. The stages that Lydia Loveless has sung her heart out on\, has collapsed on\, and laughed on\, all mirror the stages of her life thus far for the world to see. When Loveless released her first album over a decade ago\, she was still a teenager whose songs of debauchery\, guzzling alcohol and doing cocaine were an audio wet dream for a certain type of listener who not only wear their music tastes on their (tattooed) sleeve\, but in the lifestyle that they emulate: “outlaw” music with brains – akin to Steve Earle\, Drive-By Truckers and Lucinda Williams\, vintage country heart with a heartland rock soul.    \nIn the end\, the music industry is still sadly a man’s world and\, as such\, Loveless grew up in the spotlight (or perhaps\, more accurately\, the bar lights) while she was placed on a pedestal. Her voicemail greeting is a tongue-in-cheek ode to this: “Hi\, this is Lydia Loveless\, savior of cowpunk. Please leave a message and I will get back to you.”  \nThe time between their late adolescence to now is defined by a shelf full of records\, hundreds of thousands of miles on the road\, and a ribbon of heartbreaks pockmarking their trail. Loveless is a fiercely brave writer who bluntly assesses their life in song: their struggles with alcohol and depression\, and the uncertainty of not only the future\, but what piecing together the past will mean for the present.  \nIn 2020\, they put out their excellent fourth full-length Daughter on their own label\, Honey\, You’re Gonna Be Late Records\, with encouragement from their friend Jason Isbell\, but could not tour behind it; the one consistent throughline in Loveless’ life was impossible due to the pandemic. They were living in North Carolina with their boyfriend at the time\, stuck\, away from the stages they grew up on\, isolated from their family\, and going stir-crazy. As the world came undone and then back together again\, Loveless returned to Columbus\, where their career first began. Starting anew\, Loveless found part-time work at a recording studio (Secret Studios) and began processing the last two years of their life. The title of their new album\, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again\, came easy—like a mantra from the heavens.   \nNothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again continues the evolution of Loveless. The artist who once sang that she would rather stay home and drink gallons of wine is now on the other end of the bottle\, where a bit of resignation resides. She sings on “Feel”: “I’m getting older and my jets are starting to cool\, if I ever get sober it’s really over for you fools.” Though a melancholic weight rests on the record—as it was written after the breakup with her longtime boyfriend and following a period of isolation and depression during the pandemic—it also feels like a triumphant moment from an artist who’s continuing her stride. Loveless has always been a brutally honest songwriter\, one whose articulation of love\, heartbreak and bad habits is wrapped not only in catchy melodies but also her finesse with words. \nNothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again musically retains the spirit of Loveless’ previous records\, but also moves past the chunky drunk and almost out-of-control riffing of their earliest work. Present here is something more akin to Rumors and Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac—and it works incredibly well. Their voice is more controlled and wiser. Although the subject matter that they are mining is\, at times\, desolate\, they mask it with the smoother production. It’s as beautiful and tragic as a woman crying in the rain\, with make-up streaming down her cheeks: at once real and mesmerizing. \nGently crushing standout “Runaway” opens with a floating piano chord\, slowly building with detailed\, multifaceted flourishes to a memorable chorus: “I don’t like to run\, I just like to run away.” It’s a stunning showcase of Loveless’ powerhouse vocals and heart-wrenching lyricism. On “Toothache\,” she sings about the mundanity of daily life feeling catastrophic enough to precipitate a breakdown\, as kinetic\, dynamic arrangements add to the track’s intense and claustrophobic mood. Album highlight “Sex and Money” was made for driving with the windows down on a sunny summer day\, and Loveless’ wry and self-deprecating sense of humor sparkles: “I know I’m not saving the world / But I gotta live in it so I might as well splurge / On 200 cotton t-shirts with my face on the front.” “Poor Boy” recalls the excitement\, energy and rebellion of bands like The Replacements\, but Loveless makes the mood her own with a subtle twang and a lot of vulnerability: “I need to clean up my mess and leave the poor boy alone.” \nNothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again is not only a break-up record drifting back to some of the best of its kind\, like Richard & Linda Thompson’s Shoot Out the Lights\, Superchunk’s Foolish and of course\, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors\, it’s also a reminder to keep improving oneself\, taking ownership and moving forward—alone\, if needed. Complex and captivating\, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again is a brave declaration from a person who has survived a lot. Here they lays bare not only their raw pain\, but also the strength and resiliency they’ve earned along the way\, that only Loveless could hold. \nReese McHenry opens for the show. \n \nReese McHenry came up swinging in Northern Minnesota and she didn’t sit still for very long. A true troubadour\, her powerful voice has driven her from the fresh greens of Eau Claire to the dusty motels of Albuquerque and everywhere in between. Since settling in North Carolina\, this prolific songwriter and jagged performer has lent her fire and talent to a number of recording projects and now turns her attention to her own damn show. Her songs defy genre and\, though one could still categorize them as straight-shooting “rock\,” the real thread connecting these songs is a wry brand of humor mixed with an ability to catch a hook at just the right moment. McHenry’s true signature\, of course\, is her emotive blues voice that can change at any moment from soft sweetness to a torrential downpour. DESCRIPTION:In a time when the popular choice is to chase the double yellow line down the road to country radio\, Boy Named Banjo thrives on its fringes. The Nashville-raised five-piece is a fusion of contemporary country\, Americana and folk-rock stacked on a foundation of bluegrass. \n“We’re trying to find our own niche within popular country music today\,” says Sam McCullough (drums). “But not straight down the middle.” \nThe band\, which has been together in some iteration since members were in high school\, is comprised of Barton Davies (banjo)\, Ford Garrard (bass/standing bass)\, Sam McCullough (drums) Willard Logan (mandolin\, acoustic/electric guitar) and William Reames (acoustic guitar/harmonica). William and Willard played in a middle school garage rock band together\, but it wasn’t until William met Barton in high school English class that Boy Named Banjo started to take shape. \nBoy Named Banjo released their debut EP\, Circles\, on Mercury Records in summer of 2021. The collection includes seven tracks co-written by members of the band including he compassionate “Go Out Dancing\,” which the band says takes on a much larger meaning post pandemic thinking “if it really was ending” what would we do? They used the time to write songs and hone in on their sound with writer/producer Oscar Charles (Carly Pearce\, Charlie Worsham\, Elvie Shane). With a catalog of songs to choose from\, and recent time spent in the studio\, the guys are deciding what to run with next. \nThe band is currently out on the road playing some of country music’s largest festivals including Dierks Bentley’s Seven Peaks\, Country Jam\, and they recently made their CMA Fest debut playing at the Ascend Amphitheatre Nighttime Concert. DESCRIPTION:Attention all planets of the Solar Federation…for ‘one night only’ some of the best drummers in the city will come together to pay tribute to the late Neil Peart with an evening of Rush classics and deep cuts.  \nTo commemorate the third year of URSH\, the band will be performing the classic album “Permanent Waves” in its entirety. Released in 1980\, Permanent Waves was the first step away from Rush’s early swords and sorcery epics and a foot-in-the-door to both prototype heavy metal and 80’s new wave. \nFeatured drummers include Maxwell Button (Moonbats\,) Chris Burnsides (Sleepers Awake\,) Troy Kunkler (October Ember\, Troy Kunkler Trio\,) Billy Cool (The Deeptones\,) Jared Keron (LAJ\, Kazowie\, TUML\,) Mark Evans (Samarra\,) Steven Bustos (Summon Luke\, Mystic Mamba\, The Turbos\,) and Jared Fowler (Player’s Club.) \nThe house band is Rob Bradley (Sleepers Awake\, Mr. Fahrenheit & the Loverboys\, The Liner Notes\,) Bill Patterson (The Wet Darlings\, Pet Rabbits\, Josh Krajcik\,) Brent Mullin (The Deeptones) and Levi Brown (Kumwera.) \nAnd introducing vocalists: Luke Harris (Playing to Vapors\, Summon Luke\,) Brent Mullin\, Stephanie Rogers and Anna Rose Flood. \n*Please note that performers may be subject to change. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show.
