DESCRIPTION:Jorma Kaukonen\, along with special guest John Hurlbut\, returns to Natalie’s with a very special evening of music! In a career that has already spanned a half-century\, Kaukonen has been one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music\, blues\, and Americana\, and at the forefront of popular rock-and-roll. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy nominee\, he is a founding member of two legendary bands\, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna. Jorma Kaukonen’s repertoire goes far beyond his involvement creating psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. \nBut performance and recording are only part of the story. As the leading practitioner and teacher of fingerstyle guitar\, Jorma and his wife Vanessa Lillian operate one of the world’s most unique centers for the study of guitar and other instruments. Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp is located on 125 acres of fields\, woods\, hills\, and streams in the Appalachian foothills of \nSoutheastern Ohio. Since it opened in 1998\, thousands of musicians whose skills range from basic to highly accomplished gather for weekends of master instruction offered by Jorma and other instructors who are leaders in their musical fields. \nAs Jorma’s former road manager and the only manager of his Fur Peach Ranch Guitar Camp\, John Hurlbut and Jorma have been friends since 1984\, and recently celebrated the release of their album The River Flows. Being close friends and neighbors allowed them to do a lot of picking and Jorma loves to step out of the spotlight to provide lead flourishes while backing up John’s signature vocal and rhythm guitar interpretations.  \nIn 2019 St. Martin’s Press published Jorma‘s autobiography\, Been So Long: My Life and Music\, written to express his life both in and out of the music world. As Kaukonen describes\, “My story is my story. DESCRIPTION:At any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 36 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But his forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft.  \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. It’s a move you might expect at a contemporary R&B show\, but it’s downright shocking when you realize that Rush is in his late 80s. \n“I never thought I would be here this long\,” says Rush. “I was 83 years old before I won a Grammy\, but it’s better late than never. I laugh about it\, but I’m so blessed and I surely never thought I’d be making a living doing what I’m doing. I’m not just an old guy on my way out.” \nHardly. Rush’s busy schedule includes headlining European festivals with his band and solo programs at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center\, and he just recorded an album of brand new material\, All My Love For You\, coming out via his own label Deep Rush Records in collaboration with Nashville-based Thirty Tigers. Over the last several years he’s won a second Grammy\, re-recorded his 1971 hit Chicken Heads together with his old friend Buddy Guy and young blues star Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, and written a critically acclaimed autobiography\, I Ain’t Studdin’ You: My American Blues Story. \nThat story began in rural Homer/Haynesville\, Louisiana\, where Rush—born Emmett Ellis\, Jr.—grew up on his family’s farm picking cotton\, tending to mules and chickens\, and living in a home without electricity nor indoor plumbing. He built his first guitar on the side of the family’s house out of broom wire\, nails\, bottles and bricks. \nThe blues\, Rush recalls\, provided “an escape from the cotton fields. You’d go out on Saturday night to the juke joints\, but then on Monday morning you’d go back into the cotton fields to work for your bossman.” \nHe left behind farm work to perform on the road with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels\, and as “Bobby Rush”—a name he took on out of respect to his father\, a minister—he toured the jukes and clubs of Louisiana\, Arkansas and Mississippi before settling in Chicago in the 1950s. DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s Grandview and Zeppelin Productions are pleased to present Wiliam Matheny for a special evening on Charlie’s Stage.  \nMany artists find inspiration on the road\, but few do so with the keen eye and narrative talents of William Matheny. The West Virginia-based singer-songwriter finds inspiration for his brand of Appalachian Americana at truck stops and hotel lobbies\, filtering his experiences through a perspective that’s equal parts curious and compassionate. On That Grand\, Old Feeling\, Matheny shares that perspective across nine new tracks. \nThat Grand\, Old Feeling follows Matheny’s 2017 album Strange Constellations\, which drew critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and PopMatters. Matheny wrote and completed That Grand\, Old Feeling before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, recording the LP with producer Bud Carroll at Trackside Studio in Point Pleasant\, WV. Carroll joins the proceedings on guitar\, with Adam L. Meisterhans (guitar)\, Clint Sutton (drums)\, Jeremy Batten (piano\, organ)\, John R. Miller (bass\, vocals) and J. Tom Hnatow (pedal steel) rounding out the band. All of these fantastic players are fellow West Virginians and Matheny’s longtime friends. \nOpener “Late Blooming Forever” is one of Matheny’s longest gestating songs\, as he began writing the track\, which grapples with moving on from youth and coming into one’s own\, when he was 19. A gently driving beat and melodic hook give the song a propulsive feel\, mimicking the sense of motion in Matheny’s image-rich lyrics. “I finished it 15 years later\, after I’d stayed in some places a little longer than I’d intended to\, both physically and emotionally\,” he explains. “It’s sort of a hymn to hesitation.” \n“Every Way to Lose” is a slick\, moody rocker with shades of Drive-By Truckers and Magnolia Electric Co. Matheny wrote the song after a drive from Muscle Shoals to Nashville piqued his interest in Alabama’s Walls of Jericho trailhead\, with that image anchoring the opening lyric. The almost fatalistic nature of that song leads fittingly into “Bird of Youth\,” which Matheny wrote the night before recording it and whose roots trace back to Matheny’s days playing cover songs with his father at the local Elks Lodge and his time working in his family’s video store. The COVID-19 shutdown\, and its subsequent shuttering of the live music industry\, also led Matheny to ponder his own role in a profession that\, at the time\, felt suddenly obsolete\, a feeling that creeps into the track’s meditation on the passage of time. \n“If I could meet an elevator operator\, I feel like I would know what their experience was like\, you know\,” he says\, with a laugh. “They don’t have a gig. I don’t have a gig. In the same way\, I wish there were some Vaudeville musicians still around who had to cancel all of their dates for the Spanish flu. Do you think any of them are still alive?” \n“Grand Old Feeling” is the LP’s thesis statement of sorts\, drawn from Matheny’s efforts to recapture the electric feeling of youthful passion\, or “the singing sparrow in the marrow of [his] bones.” “They had written ‘good luck’ in blue party cups in the holes of the chain link fence\,” Matheny sings at the track’s open\, and with that hopeful image he explores the many thrills and heartaches of life as a touring musician. The song is also a showcase for Matheny’s complicated relationship with his home state\, which permeates the rest of the LP. \n“I feel like West Virginia is a main character in a lot of this music\, too\, the way that people talk about certain movies being a love letter to New York or whatever\,” he says. “The lyrics about the Go-Mart cassettes\, the unhappily married folks at the Elks Lodge or the Bernard Coffindaffer crosses you see all over the Southeast. He was a West Virginia guy and by all accounts a very prickly hang.” \n“If You Could Only See Me Now” is Matheny trying his hand at writing a standard\, or\, as he describes it\, writing a song “where you don’t see any fingerprints on the glass.” “Heartless People” inspires a simple but potent response from Matheny\, who sums up the track thusly: “Don’t let the bastards get you down. It’s a cold world out there.” \nIf there’s a centerpiece to That Grand\, Old Feeling\, it’s “Down at the Hotel Canfield\,” a track inspired by the Dubuque\, IA\, hotel infamous for a 1946 fire that killed dozens. Rebuilt in 2013\, the hotel’s surroundings are as eerie as its backstory\, as Matheny describes a visit to the town as being “super creepy.” The song itself is its own kind of ghost story\, as Matheny admits\, “I ain’t what I used to be.” Like “Bird of Youth\,” “Hotel Canfield” came to Matheny the night before he and his band went into the studio to begin work on the LP. \n“We stayed there after a gig and we had a horrible night’s sleep\,” he says. “And we came back a few months later and played at the same club. And we were all really excited to get back there because we were really fascinated with the place. I was talking to the guy at the club and we were like\, ‘Man\, we had a horrible night’s sleep. What is the deal with that place? It feels really weird. Is it?’ ‘Oh\, yeah. One of the worst hotel fires in America happened at that place.’” \nFans of Matheny’s will recognize the song “Christian Name\,” a track he released\, with the Centro-matic cover “Flashes and Cables” as its b-side\, as a single in 2018. For That Grand\, Old Feeling\, Matheny revisited the track and gave it an updated studio treatment\, with its road-weary message fitting well with the rest of the album. \n“I wanted to give it more of a proper home on an actual record\,” he says. “It’s very much a tour song\, the kind of road music you write while you’re out there doing it. We released our first record in 2017 and then hit the road really\, really hard on some spectacularly grueling\, money-losing\, soul-crushing tours. It’s the kind of thing you have to do when you’re getting a new venture off the ground. Most people don’t get a shortcut around that.” \nThat Grand\, Old Feeling closes with “Stranger’s Voice\,” a groovy rocker that name-checks Matheny’s like-minded contemporary John R. Miller and\, thematically\, picks up where “Christian Name” left off. “We were in a really\, really hard spot\, with barely any money for gasoline and no money for food\,” he says. “We were on the ‘vegan chili circuit’ there for a while\, playing in a lot of backrooms of backrooms of art galleries\, that kind of thing. That one’s another road tune. And it’s mostly about how you can’t really go home again\, either.” \nWhile That Grand\, Old Feeling is a document of Matheny’s own journey as a seeker\, he hopes that the album can inspire anyone else out there searching for meaning in their own lives\, whether they’re searching at a truck stop or in an album of old photographs. “I feel like I’ve just been trying to recapture that youthful excitement my entire life\, trying to regain that clarity and that feeling of purpose\,” he says. “And it comes and goes. I mostly seem to be looking for it at gas stations and rest areas and at gigs. But I think a lot of people are probably looking for it in a lot of places like that\, too. DESCRIPTION:This event is a celebration of Tom Petty in support of the Columbus organization\, We Amplify Voices.  A collection of Ohio artists have joined to create Full Moon Fever\, a Tribute to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Playing his most recognizable hits and popular album cuts\, you will experience 2 nights of sing-alongs for a good cause and a good time\, supporting WAV\, and enjoying the timeless tunes of a music icon\, Tom Petty.  \nWe Amplify Voices: \nAbout We Amplify Voices:  Formerly The Dick & Jane Project\, WAV’s mission is to heal communities through creative expression. We bring people together with artists to share their experiences\, emotions\, and ideas\, and collectively turn those conversations into art. Then\, we amplify their stories to the broader community by sharing their songs\, videos and artwork on local radio\, streaming platforms and in public spaces to change hearts\, minds and start meaningful conversations. Founded as an after-school songwriting program by Columbus-based charter school administrator Ben Shinabery in 2011\, WAV has since provided programming in over 30 Central Ohio schools\, and 15 community programs serving between 250-350 individuals annually. \nFull Moon Fever: \nEvery so often\, an artist comes along that appeals to all types of people\, crosses musical boundaries\, and stands the test of time.  While there are many in the history of rock and roll\, few are as loved and listened to as Tom Petty.  Full Moon Fever was formed to pay homage to Tom’s musical legacy along with his band\, The Heartbreakers.  \nHaving played in both original and cover bands over the last 20 years\, Full Moon Fever’s seven members have a collective wealth of experience\, including national and international tours\, record label signings\, publishing agreements\, and opening for the likes of Bon Jovi\, The Doobie Brothers\, Shakira\, and Maroon 5.  Full Moon Fever continues to excite audiences around Ohio\, SELLING OUT every one of their 2023 shows!  \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. SUMMARY:Peter Case
DESCRIPTION:“I try to take things I love and use them in a new way\,” said triple Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Peter Case of his 16th solo album Doctor Moan. Case brings his considerable songwriting ability to an 11-song collection\, largely performed on piano\, including his first solo recorded instrumental. Released by Sunset Blvd Records on March 31\, Case’s piano-based songs are emotionally\, sonically and stylistically rich. \nAs a founding member of the early punk era trio The Nerves\, in 1977 Case toured the nation sharing bills with the Ramones\, Mink DeVille\, Pere Ubu\, and Devo. The Nerves single “Hanging on the Telephone\,” was covered by Blondie. In 1979\, Case formed the Plimsouls\, a record-breaking live act in California\, recording albums for Planet/Elektra and Geffen. Their independent single\, “A Million Miles Away\,” entered the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard\, performed by bands around the world. The band performed in the cult classic film Valley Girl and the Nerves and Plimsouls timeless teenage rock ‘n’ roll continues to appeal to fans of each new generation. \nAfter the Plimsouls\, Case rediscovered his musical roots on his self-titled solo debut\, produced by T Bone Burnett. The New York Times declared Peter Case the best album of 1986. It earned a five-star Rolling Stone review and a Grammy nomination. Tom is a virtuoso player of the Chapman Stick\, a guitar/bass hybrid tapping instrument invented in California by Emmett Chapman. Tom is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston. \nTokyo-born Hideyo Moriya began his guitar journey with surf music and British rock\, before relocating to Boston to study at Berklee. Hideyo is currently on hiatus from touring and lives in Chiba Japan. Lams\, Richards and Moriya felt the call to push themselves to the limit by enrolling in Robert Fripp’s challenging Guitar Craft courses\, where they first met in 1987. They went on to tour together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists\, before forming the California Guitar Trio in Los Angeles four years later. \nRecently\, the trio expanded its collaborative possibilities by working within a six-guitar format with the Montreal Guitar Trio. During these groundbreaking\, highly-entertaining shows\, the acts perform inventive arrangements of each other’s repertoire\, and new music for guitar sextet. DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s presents a special evening with the amazing saxophonist Marion Meadows backed by The Urban Jazz Coalition! Marion Meadows first hit the airwaves in 1991 with “For Lovers Only”\, his first RCA release and a huge success\, and was followed by his groundbreaking “Keep it Right There” album. He also became a well-known sideman\, recording or performing over the years with Brook Benton\, Eartha Kitt\, The Temptations\, Michael Bolton\, Angela Bofill\, Bob Baldwin\, Chuck Loeb\, John Lee\, among many others.  \nMeadows came a staple of the contemporary jazz format with his subsequent recordings\, and most recently Soul Traveler\, the first installment of his Soul Trilogy which now showcases his current release\, Soul City” on the New York-based Shanachie Label. Meadows is a semi-pro cyclist\, graphic artist and designer and received a doctorate from Wilberforce University in 2016. \nThe Urban Jazz Coalition (UJC) has been one of the hottest live performance ensembles on the contemporary jazz scene for some time now and 2022 marks the celebration of this groundbreaking band’s 27th Anniversary as a performing group! SUMMARY:Trad Nua Celtic Series presents Fialla
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes the apple falls far from the tree. Even without Comhaltas\, conservatories\, or competitions\, 3 musicians in Central Ohio who had come to love Celtic music came together to form Fialla. Their abilities to pick up traditional instruments and play them with grace seemed to be steeped in their DNA. All multi-instrumentalists\, and one a dancer\, they present Celtic music so faithfully one thinks they hear the accents of the old country. Finding their footing in the local scene\, including performing at the Dublin Irish Festival\, the band has grown to be a first-class representative of Celtic music. Their selection of songs and tunes and the way they arrange the pieces has a freshness devoid of the usual stigma facing up-and-coming artists. Fialla finds songs that intrigue them\, and plays with them until they make them their own. Not a pub band that plays all the favorite drinking songs\, they search for songs with the zeal of anthropologists and craft them into unique experiences. \nThe Trad Nua Celtic Series at Natalie’s is hosted by acclaimed Irish musician Randy Clepper.  Rooted in the rich tradition of Irish and Celtic music but also with new influences\, the series presents a variety of traditional acts often juxtaposing old styles with new influences\, local and international artists and featuring traditional instruments.   \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n
