The Latin jazz influence in the band’s music comes from composer and pianist Dean Marcellana\, who spent many years in the Boston area performing with some of the top jazz and Latin jazz musicians in the city. And much like the artists who have influenced  him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly  his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and  renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. Born and raised in Maine\, Paul  attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open  mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the ear of  folk luminary Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album\, Stories.  \nHis songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and  have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). Through a  steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring  presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Along the way\, he has  picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston  Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic  Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the  2019 NERFA Album of the Year.  \nHis new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided  political stances on his own imprint\, Rosella Records.  \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/ellis-paul-2/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/ellisrad.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240211 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240212 DTSTAMP:20240118T045450 CREATED:20230206T165148Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231219T151729Z UID:126935-1707609600-1707695999@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:CLOSED DESCRIPTION:We are closed today\, February 11th for a staff party. These are declarations of love for music\, songs\, acoustic guitar\, travels\, and also for the warmth of the audience\, the Founding  Fathers of the art\, the music communities that you can find at festivals and jam sessions\, for his hometown Genoa and also for the smell of the “sauté” of onion\, porcini\, parsley and pepper! A musical path for togetherness based on a unique guitar style that Beppe brings to the audience with lightness and sincerity.  \nBeppe Gambetta is a musician and ambassador of art\, who\, for more than four decades\, continues to amaze us with the  uniqueness and originality of his projects born on both sides of the Atlantic. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 36 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But his forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft.  \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.”  \nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley and Robert Hunter and George Jones and Elvis Costello and John Oates\,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.”  \nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.”  \nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again\,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship\, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn\, Lauderdale’s collaborative  \nspirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful\, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. “When everything works right\, it’s just magical to be able to hear them back\,” he says. “You feel\, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes\, like life makes sense.” \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/jim-lauderdale-solo/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Jim-Lauderdale-scaled.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240303T143000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240303T143000 DTSTAMP:20240118T045450 CREATED:20240112T160025Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240112T160025Z UID:131093-1709476200-1709476200@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:Gospel Soul Brunch: Quan Howell celebrates Commissioned DESCRIPTION:Soul Sunday at Natalie’s is held on the first Sunday of each month. The West Virginia-based singer-songwriter finds inspiration for his brand of Appalachian Americana at truck stops and hotel lobbies\, filtering his experiences through a perspective that’s equal parts curious and compassionate. On That Grand\, Old Feeling\, Matheny shares that perspective across nine new tracks. \nThat Grand\, Old Feeling follows Matheny’s 2017 album Strange Constellations\, which drew critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and PopMatters. Matheny wrote and completed That Grand\, Old Feeling before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, recording the LP with producer Bud Carroll at Trackside Studio in Point Pleasant\, WV. Carroll joins the proceedings on guitar\, with Adam L. Meisterhans (guitar)\, Clint Sutton (drums)\, Jeremy Batten (piano\, organ)\, John R. Miller (bass\, vocals) and J. Tom Hnatow (pedal steel) rounding out the band. All of these fantastic players are fellow West Virginians and Matheny’s longtime friends. \nOpener “Late Blooming Forever” is one of Matheny’s longest gestating songs\, as he began writing the track\, which grapples with moving on from youth and coming into one’s own\, when he was 19. A gently driving beat and melodic hook give the song a propulsive feel\, mimicking the sense of motion in Matheny’s image-rich lyrics. “I finished it 15 years later\, after I’d stayed in some places a little longer than I’d intended to\, both physically and emotionally\,” he explains. “It’s sort of a hymn to hesitation.” \n“Every Way to Lose” is a slick\, moody rocker with shades of Drive-By Truckers and Magnolia Electric Co. Matheny wrote the song after a drive from Muscle Shoals to Nashville piqued his interest in Alabama’s Walls of Jericho trailhead\, with that image anchoring the opening lyric. The almost fatalistic nature of that song leads fittingly into “Bird of Youth\,” which Matheny wrote the night before recording it and whose roots trace back to Matheny’s days playing cover songs with his father at the local Elks Lodge and his time working in his family’s video store. The COVID-19 shutdown\, and its subsequent shuttering of the live music industry\, also led Matheny to ponder his own role in a profession that\, at the time\, felt suddenly obsolete\, a feeling that creeps into the track’s meditation on the passage of time. \n“If I could meet an elevator operator\, I feel like I would know what their experience was like\, you know\,” he says\, with a laugh. “They don’t have a gig. I don’t have a gig. In the same way\, I wish there were some Vaudeville musicians still around who had to cancel all of their dates for the Spanish flu. Do you think any of them are still alive?” \n“Grand Old Feeling” is the LP’s thesis statement of sorts\, drawn from Matheny’s efforts to recapture the electric feeling of youthful passion\, or “the singing sparrow in the marrow of [his] bones.” “They had written ‘good luck’ in blue party cups in the holes of the chain link fence\,” Matheny sings at the track’s open\, and with that hopeful image he explores the many thrills and heartaches of life as a touring musician. The song is also a showcase for Matheny’s complicated relationship with his home state\, which permeates the rest of the LP. \n“I feel like West Virginia is a main character in a lot of this music\, too\, the way that people talk about certain movies being a love letter to New York or whatever\,” he says. “The lyrics about the Go-Mart cassettes\, the unhappily married folks at the Elks Lodge or the Bernard Coffindaffer crosses you see all over the Southeast. He was a West Virginia guy and by all accounts a very prickly hang.” \n“If You Could Only See Me Now” is Matheny trying his hand at writing a standard\, or\, as he describes it\, writing a song “where you don’t see any fingerprints on the glass.” “Heartless People” inspires a simple but potent response from Matheny\, who sums up the track thusly: “Don’t let the bastards get you down. It’s a cold world out there.” \nIf there’s a centerpiece to That Grand\, Old Feeling\, it’s “Down at the Hotel Canfield\,” a track inspired by the Dubuque\, IA\, hotel infamous for a 1946 fire that killed dozens. Rebuilt in 2013\, the hotel’s surroundings are as eerie as its backstory\, as Matheny describes a visit to the town as being “super creepy.” The song itself is its own kind of ghost story\, as Matheny admits\, “I ain’t what I used to be.” Like “Bird of Youth\,” “Hotel Canfield” came to Matheny the night before he and his band went into the studio to begin work on the LP. \n“We stayed there after a gig and we had a horrible night’s sleep\,” he says. “And we came back a few months later and played at the same club. And we were all really excited to get back there because we were really fascinated with the place. I was talking to the guy at the club and we were like\, ‘Man\, we had a horrible night’s sleep. What is the deal with that place? It feels really weird. Is it?’ ‘Oh\, yeah. One of the worst hotel fires in America happened at that place.’” \nFans of Matheny’s will recognize the song “Christian Name\,” a track he released\, with the Centro-matic cover “Flashes and Cables” as its b-side\, as a single in 2018. For That Grand\, Old Feeling\, Matheny revisited the track and gave it an updated studio treatment\, with its road-weary message fitting well with the rest of the album. \n“I wanted to give it more of a proper home on an actual record\,” he says. “It’s very much a tour song\, the kind of road music you write while you’re out there doing it. We released our first record in 2017 and then hit the road really\, really hard on some spectacularly grueling\, money-losing\, soul-crushing tours. It’s the kind of thing you have to do when you’re getting a new venture off the ground. Most people don’t get a shortcut around that.” \nThat Grand\, Old Feeling closes with “Stranger’s Voice\,” a groovy rocker that name-checks Matheny’s like-minded contemporary John R. Miller and\, thematically\, picks up where “Christian Name” left off. “We were in a really\, really hard spot\, with barely any money for gasoline and no money for food\,” he says. “We were on the ‘vegan chili circuit’ there for a while\, playing in a lot of backrooms of backrooms of art galleries\, that kind of thing. That one’s another road tune. And it’s mostly about how you can’t really go home again\, either.” \nWhile That Grand\, Old Feeling is a document of Matheny’s own journey as a seeker\, he hopes that the album can inspire anyone else out there searching for meaning in their own lives\, whether they’re searching at a truck stop or in an album of old photographs. “I feel like I’ve just been trying to recapture that youthful excitement my entire life\, trying to regain that clarity and that feeling of purpose\,” he says. “And it comes and goes. I mostly seem to be looking for it at gas stations and rest areas and at gigs. But I think a lot of people are probably looking for it in a lot of places like that\, too. Pilgrim to pilgrim\, I hope you find it.” \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Case brings his considerable songwriting ability to an 11-song collection\, largely performed on piano\, including his first solo recorded instrumental. Released by Sunset Blvd Records on March 31\, Case’s piano-based songs are emotionally\, sonically and stylistically rich. \nAs a founding member of the early punk era trio The Nerves\, in 1977 Case toured the nation sharing bills with the Ramones\, Mink DeVille\, Pere Ubu\, and Devo. The Nerves single “Hanging on the Telephone\,” was covered by Blondie. In 1979\, Case formed the Plimsouls\, a record-breaking live act in California\, recording albums for Planet/Elektra and Geffen. Their independent single\, “A Million Miles Away\,” entered the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard\, performed by bands around the world. The band performed in the cult classic film Valley Girl and the Nerves and Plimsouls timeless teenage rock ‘n’ roll continues to appeal to fans of each new generation. \nAfter the Plimsouls\, Case rediscovered his musical roots on his self-titled solo debut\, produced by T Bone Burnett. The New York Times declared Peter Case the best album of 1986. It earned a five-star Rolling Stone review and a Grammy nomination. As one of the first songwriters of his generation to turn from rock music toward an acoustic sound\, Case also helped usher in what became known as Americana music. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Even without Comhaltas\, conservatories\, or competitions\, 3 musicians in Central Ohio who had come to love Celtic music came together to form Fialla. Their abilities to pick up traditional instruments and play them with grace seemed to be steeped in their DNA. All multi-instrumentalists\, and one a dancer\, they present Celtic music so faithfully one thinks they hear the accents of the old country. Finding their footing in the local scene\, including performing at the Dublin Irish Festival\, the band has grown to be a first-class representative of Celtic music. Their selection of songs and tunes and the way they arrange the pieces has a freshness devoid of the usual stigma facing up-and-coming artists. Fialla finds songs that intrigue them\, and plays with them until they make them their own. Not a pub band that plays all the favorite drinking songs\, they search for songs with the zeal of anthropologists and craft them into unique experiences. \nThe Trad Nua Celtic Series at Natalie’s is hosted by acclaimed Irish musician Randy Clepper.  Rooted in the rich tradition of Irish and Celtic music but also with new influences\, the series presents a variety of traditional acts often juxtaposing old styles with new influences\, local and international artists and featuring traditional instruments.   \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/trad-nua-celtic-series-presents-fialla-2/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Fialla_Natalies-Worthington_08.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240320T203000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240320T203000 DTSTAMP:20240118T045450 CREATED:20231201T050023Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231120T223726Z UID:130526-1710966600-1710966600@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:Missy Raines & Allegheny DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY® nominated Missy Raines was named 2021 International Bluegrass Music  Association Bass Player of the Year\, for the 10th time\, more than any other bass player in the  history of the organization. Biram + Adrian + Meredith DESCRIPTION:Scott H. Biram\, a proud Texan raised on the outskirts of Austin\, is a  maverick in the tradition of Doug Sahm\, Roky Erickson (13th Floor  Elevators) and Gibby Haines (Butthole Surfers). Shortly after  releasing his third record (2003’s Lo-Fi Mojo)\, the 28-year-old’s life  was nearly cut short after a near-fatal head-on collision with a big rig semi. He was still bedridden when he made his Rehabilitation  Blues EP\, the predecessor to his 2005 debut for Bloodshot Records\,  The Dirty Old One Man Band.  \nFlash forward to 2022. After almost thirty years of tirelessly writing\,  recording and touring the front and backroads of America as a solo  bluesman\, collecting a wide array of critical accolades\, Biram found  himself suddenly stopped cold by the pandemic. Once again\, unwilling to allow outsized forces slow him down\, he took  advantage of the shutdown to write\, record and produce nine new  songs and two traditional covers for his new album\, The One & Only  Scott H. Biram\, his 13th overall and 9th for Bloodshot Records.   \n“I’m constantly trying to go back to the junky\, lo-fi sounds of my  early records\,” says Biram. “But it’s harder to do now. The more you  learn about production\, the harder it is to convey that genuine  unproduced feeling. I have to compromise between overproduced  and lo-fi\, so it sounds pro\, but still keeps that grittiness.”  \n“I tend to be all over the place. My brain’s restless. If something  interests me\, I’ll write a song about it. I have a kinda rootsy\, blue  collar approach with blues\, country and folk\, but I always throw in  \nsome of my heavier influences from metal and hard rock. I consider  myself a singer and guitarist\, above everything else.”  \nThe music on The One and Only Scott H. Biram has the down home\,  in-your-face feel that Biram is noted for. “No Man’s Land” opens  with a blues turnaround played on a twanging electric guitar\,  backed by a stomping bass and drum backbeat. Biram growls out a  lyric\, describing the hazards of growing up poor in a small Texas  town\, breathing the fumes from oil wells and brush fires. “I was  remembering a bumper sticker I saw as a kid that said\, ‘Oil Field  Trash and Proud of It!’”  \n“My music has a lot of aggression to it. I express myself without  holding back. If you mixed Muddy Waters\, Bill Monroe\, Jerry Reed\,  and Black Flag\, you’d have a good idea of my sound. It’s punk\, blues\,  country\, metal\, bluegrass and dirty.”  \n“Inside a Bar” captures the feel of an empty saloon on a slow  Monday night. It’s a straight-forward country blues\, with an  understated vocal\, intensified by an impressive solo\, that mimics the  tones of a pedal steel guitar. “I was going for the sound of loneliness  and alcoholism colliding.”  \nOther notable tracks include “Sinner’s Dinner\,” a rootsy rock tune  that gives us Biram’s take on the riot of January 6; “Dig a Hole/Big  Liar\,” a Chicago blues track with a shredding electric guitar solo that  zooms from speaker to speaker; a down and dirty southern gospel  style take on Leadbelly’s “Easy Rider\,” with a funky rhythm and  background whoops and hollers that suggest the reactions of a  packed Baptist tent revival\, and an acoustic take on “Death Has No  Mercy\,” the blues standard made popular by the Rev. Gary Davis. ;  \nThe most unexpected sound is “InterTransmissions\,” a short jarring  burst of noise\, feedback and sound effects. “I loved the Butthole  \nSurfers and a lot of psychedelic music when I was comin’ up\,” Biram  says. “I wanted to lean into that and add some color to the album. I  don’t think I’ll ever actually do it on stage\, unless I’m just pushing a  button on a sampler. Excessive loops and samples are not really my  go-to style.”  \nThe songs on the album deal with mortality\, romance\, religion\,  drinking and memories of the past\, but it’s difficult to identify an  overarching theme. “I studied art in college\, so I think of my albums  as collages. I grew up playing in punk\, metal\, blues\, country and  bluegrass bands\, so I throw in a bunch of stuff to see what resonates.  I’ll follow a heavy blues tune with a tender love song\, just the way  life is\, no one theme. I’m not tryna write a rock opera. Most of the  time\, I’m just getting’ shit off my chest.”    \nBiram’s albums and EPs are a separate entity from the sound he gets  on stage. “I have a wall of speakers behind me\, a big subwoofer\, old  beat up hollow-body guitars\, harmonicas\, and an amplified stomp  board to provide a heavy back beat. I sing in several different kinds  of voices and my solid sound really fills the room. I don’t use loops  but\, in the studio\, I sometimes overdub bass\, guitar\, drums\,  tambourine and percussion. Other times\, I dumb it down and just do  what I do on stage.”  \nBiram grew up in San Marcos\, Texas. “My dad played sax a little bit  around the house. My uncles played guitar together in a band. There  were always guitars and pianos around. I messed around with ‘em\,  but didn’t get serious about playing and songwriting until high  school. I sang and wrote lyrics in a punk-metal band. We played in  local bars for free beer\, and any attention we could get from the  local chicks. That was cool enough for us back then.   \n“My dad turned me on to Doc Watson and Leadbelly early on. I  inherited my great-grandfather’s banjo when I was 19\, and I started  \ndoing solo acoustic shows on the side. All that while I was still  rockin’ out in the punk band. Those acoustic shows morphed into a  bluegrass band\, but I still did solo stuff on the side\, stomping my foot  on the floor and developing a more aggressive guitar approach.  Sometime around 2000\, I realized I could consolidate the folk roots  with my heavier stuff and offer something that was truly my own.  The Scott H. Biram One Man Band was born.”  \n“I never liked being called a singer/songwriter\,” says Biram\, “but  those are some of my best qualities. I don’t want people to think I’m  a ‘fool on a stool\,’ which is what I imagine comes into people’s heads  when they hear ‘singer/songwriter.’  I try to steer clear of that\, when  I can.”  \nWith The One & Only Scott H. Biram\, the singer once again proves  himself to be an unstoppable force\, refusing to bow in the face of  outside challenges and demonstrating a unique ability to live up to  the traditions of rough-hewn\, individualistic Texas-born music. He  looks forward to returning to tour the highways and byways of  America throughout 2024. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/scott-h-biram-adrian-meredith/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Scott-H.-Biram_Photo.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240427T203000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240427T203000 DTSTAMP:20240118T045451 CREATED:20240115T161355Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240115T161414Z UID:131125-1714249800-1714249800@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:Johnny Manchild & The Poor Bastards + Holdfast DESCRIPTION:The Rapture Tour \nJohnny Manchild and The Poor Bastards are a multi-genre ensemble founded by Johnny Manchild (composition\, production\, vocals\, keyboards)\, since their inception\, the band (affectionately known as “Bastards”) has grown into a musical collective with collaborators in regular rotation\, and Johnny at the helm. \n“what gives them the right to be this good?” — Anthony Fantano/The Needle Drop \nThey paved the way for the band’s independent success using the internet as a way to share their music and with a charming presence and infectious songs Johnny Manchild and The Poor Bastards built a global following and garnered over twenty million streams to date. \nUnable to be cast into any one genre\, the many elements that make up this band are fused tightly together and seamlessly deliver a wide spectrum of genres.
