DESCRIPTION:Join Appalachian Swing for a showcase performance of Remembering The Past\, their debut album featuring the music of The Kentucky Colonels\, Clarence and Roland White. Remembering the Past also features LeRoy “Mack” McNees on dobro. LeRoy was the original dobro player in the Kentucky Colonels and wrote several of their signature songs like “If You’re Ever Going To Love Me” and “I Might Take You Back Again”. For this showcase at Natalie’s the band will perform the entire album plus some other numbers from their Kentucky Colonels inspired catalog. \nAppalachian Swing is:\nAdam Schlenker: Guitar and Vocal\nHayes Griffin: Mandolin and Vocal\nTodd Sams: Banjo\nGeorge Welling: Bass and Vocal \nRemembering the Past liner notes \nAppalachian Swing was formed in 2021\, the result of a show performed by Adam Schlenker\, Hayes Griffith\, Todd Sams and George Welling. Adam and Hayes were hosting a monthly series of Americana concerts\, each with a different theme and cast of musicians\, at a club in Columbus. One such show featured the music of the Kentucky Colonels\, a short-lived but highly influential southern California bluegrass band led by brothers Roland and Clarence White. \nThat concert was so much fun and so musically rewarding that the guys decided to form a band and carry things forward. Taking its name from the Kentucky Colonels’ landmark second album\, Appalachian Swing took a somewhat unusual approach to repertoire by deciding to focus almost exclusively on the music of the Colonels\, as well as various auxiliary projects by the White brothers. \nAdam takes pains to point out that his is not a “tribute band” that tries to copy the Colonels’ recordings note for note\, lick for lick\, in an attempt to sound exactly like the earlier band. “We are heavily influenced by the Colonels\,” he says. “Their sound is a huge part of our musical DNA\, especially mine and Todd’s. But we’re not trying to just copy their music. There’s more to it than that. \n“They had a certain ethos\, an overall kind of feel\, that we find very inspiring. It’s about making decisions—harmonically and rhythmically and tastefully—that we think they might have made or that we heard them make. It’s about understanding the ingredients that went into the Kentucky Colonels initially\, and then us working with those ingredients to get our own outcome. We’re inspired by the sound that they made and their whole approach to bluegrass.” \nOn Remembering the Past\, the band’s impressive debut album\, Adam sings the lead vocal on eight of the cuts\, with George taking the lead on “I Might Take You Back Again” and “Won’t You Call Me Darling.” Hayes sings the tenor part on all but a couple of songs. Adam is a distinctive vocal stylist whose voice calls to mind both Clarence and Roland White\, at times sounding like an uncanny combination of the two. Appalachian Swing has an instrumental front line that rivals any band in the country. \nAdam\, Hayes and Todd are dazzling\, inventive instrumentalists\, heard to best advantage on this album’s three tunes\, “Farewell Blues\,” “Alabama Jubilee” and “Powder Creek.” Adam’s playing is especially brilliant on “Powder Creek” (an obscure tune written by Roland and Clarence White\, but never recorded by them) on which he artfully showcases his Clarence White influences without once quoting or copying him. \nLegendary Dobro player LeRoy “Mack” McNees\, a charter member of the Kentucky Colonels—he actually joined the band when it was still called the Country Boys—makes a very special guest appearance on Remembering the Past. He adds his bluesy\, energetic touch to five cuts: “I Am a Pilgrim\,” “Memphis Special\,” “I Might Take You Back Again\,” “Won’t You Call Me Darling” and “If You’re Ever Gonna Love Me\,” the last four of which he wrote or co-wrote. His presence on the album is both a very cool link to the past and a validation of what Appalachian Swing is doing to bring this music into the twenty-first century. \n“If we can introduce a tune like ‘Powder Creek\,’” Adam says\, “and get someone to go check out the original version of the tune on Roland’s album I Wasn’t Born to Rock and Roll\, then that’s perfect. We did something\, and it was worth doing. It’s a way of honoring what we think is important.” \nIn the final analysis\, inspiration is only as good as what one does with it. The Kentucky Colonels may have lit the spark\, but Appalachian Swing makes the music. As the band’s debut recording\, Remembering the Past is an outstanding beginning\, but it’s more than that. SUMMARY:Tophouse with Sam Burchfield
DESCRIPTION:Tophouse \nTopHouse is a Montana-raised Americana/Folk band made up of Jesse Davis\, Joe Larson\, Will Cook\, and Andy LaFave. \nCreated in 2015\, the band began as a duo when two Music Composition majors at the University of Montana\, guitarist/songwriter Jesse Davis and violinist William Cook\, realized they loved playing music together and wanted to start – immediately. Lacking both a drummer and a singer\, the first iteration of TopHouse was a virtuosity ‘Celtic folk’ instrumental duo with next-to-no connections. For about a year TopHouse performed in the bottom of parking garages in the cold Missoula air because “the reverb was cool.” William and Jesse eventually snuck their way into a local farmer’s market\, and then moved onto the illustrious stardom of coffee shops\, breweries\, and weddings. \nJoseph Larson\, a singer\, songwriter\, and guitar/banjo player\, joined the band in 2016. Joe wrote and performed songs\, while Jesse’s songs like Where Are You and Summer Never Leaves – which\, up to this point\, had simply been instrumental violin pieces – finally came into their fullness. Joseph’s addition vaulted TopHouse to local fame\, with the Missoulian naming TopHouse one the top 5 best new bands. Between 2017-2019 they released their self-produced EP Middle of Somewhere and their album Hopes & Fears while performing in festivals like the Bitterroot Celtic Festival\, Avery Fest\, and the Flathead Celtic Festival. \nTopHouse moved to Nashville TN in October of 2019. They\, like many musicians\, were stranded at their shared home for most of 2020. During this year TopHouse wrote\, recorded\, and released their second album\, Snapshot. When music city opened back up in 2021 TopHouse was invited to be the house band for Tennessee Brew Works and began performing in and around Nashville. After a difficult year of waiting and hoping\, TopHouse prevailed\, performing in events like the Local Show and going on their first official tours to Montana\, Texas\, and California. \nIn 2022 Andy LaFave the pianist joined TopHouse. Andy – an incredible songwriter and musician that regularly releases his own music under his solo project Don’t Dance – has performed with William and Joseph since childhood. With Andy’s help\, TopHouse is working on their newest music release and will be ready to inspire the populace. \nSam Burchfield \n \nWebsite | Spotify \nRaised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains of South Carolina\, Sam Burchfield was brought up on Appalachian music: folk\, gospel\, country and southern soul. The young songwriter draws on these roots with a deep lyrical honesty that carries the tradition of folk music forward. \nBurchfield’s last album\, ‘Graveyard Flower’\, seeks to reconnect to the Appalachian roots that raised him. In a world of cell phones and internet distractions\, this body of work beckons the listener to plant their feet firmly in the soil. Reconnect to the land\, reconnect to each other; ‘Graveyard Flower’ is honest music. \nSince his first EP ‘Where to Run’ in 2014\, Burchfield has grown a loyal following along the east coast through steady touring both solo and with his band of ‘Scoundrels’. Drawing influences from Queen to Ray Charles and a dash of Led Zepplin\, these guys rock. \nKenny says its been an amazing life traveling America with the flints. “Playing the whisky with \nthe Shakes was truly a bucket list moment” says Steigle. “We’ve got the music\, all we need is the audience… then let simmer to a boil… and serve.” \nWilli Phoenix \n \nWebsite \nWhether he’s playing haunting blues\, straight forward rock\, garage band noise or psychedelic fusion – Willie Phoenix delivers. Willie’s career has spanned decades – and so has his passion – never stopping\, never failing to deliver jaw-dropping performances with an undeniable edge. \nBorn in Camden Alabama\, Willie says he entered the world “wrapped in a burning southern flag” – referencing his love for the blues. Growing up\, he listened to all of the greats. They were all there on the 78/45 rpm records played on his family’s Magnavox record player:  Muddy Waters\, Lightening Hopkins\, Howling Wolf\, John Lee Hooker and country greats Hank Williams\, Buck Owens and Jerry Reed. Willie remembers thinking the guitars\, harmonicas and voices possessed the same echoing\, lonely sound as the midnight trains that rumbled past his Marion\, Ohio home. It was there\, in Marion\,  where he grew up\, went to school and cut his teeth on early British invasion blues and rock n’ roll. \nWillie has never looked back. He learned to play the blues from his father\, bluesman Willie James Creagh Sr. who played with big names like Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson II (Willie’s godfather).  Willie says\, “I had a certain knack for writing songs. I started playing guitar\, grabbed a few of my mates\, formed a band and made a lot of wonderful noise.” Willie has worked clubs and concert halls from Toronto Canada straight to the west coast neon lights of Hollywood. He’s performed with many greats\, including Muddy Waters\, BB King\, rock n’ roll’s Ramones and The Talking Heads – to name only a few. \nA prolific songwriter\, Willie has released more albums than can be mentioned – but most recently he’s released Magic in the Dark (2022)\, four albums in 2021 (Heavy Bubblegum\, 3 Chords Maybe 4\, Poster Noise\, Bomb Shelter 13).  Other recent works include This Ain’t 1968 (2020)\, Backstage Rain (2019)\, Garage Blues Band (2017)\, Blues My Soul (2016) and Captain Psychedelic (2015)\, all released through 1978 Records. \nThough he’s a very humble guy\, if you’re lucky you might get Willie to tell you about how the City of Columbus honored “the legendary rock god Willie Phoenix” by renaming 16th and High Street “Willie Phoenix Way” (October\, 2020) or about being inducted into the 2022 Columbus Blues Alliance Hall of Fame (October 2022). \nWhen not on the road\, Willie’s usually cutting sides at Eastman Studios. DESCRIPTION:Crystal Bowersox\, a northwest Ohio native currently calling Nashville home\, has built her life around music. Crystal’s love for music developed at an early age from a need to find peace in a chaotic world. For her\, music was always the most effective form of catharsis\, and she would play for anyone\, anywhere. In her own words\, “my guitar was an appendage. I couldn’t live without it.” \nDead set on a career in music\, Crystal moved to Chicago as a teenager\, where she spent her days performing underground on subway platforms in between working odd jobs. While in the big city\, she broadened her musical horizons and shared her talents with a variety of venues\, ultimately auditioning for the ninth season of American Idol. Crystal’s time on the show proved to be well spent\, as she immediately left the the soundstage for the recording studio. Since her introduction to the world through television\, Crystal has released two LP’s\, two EPs\, and several singles. Additionally\, she has used her talents to benefit several causes close to her heart\, and has become an advocate and inspiration for people living with Type 1 Diabetes. \nTo create her newest project\, Crystal called on her “chosen family” of musicians. The combination of keeping those she cherishes close to her and taking an honest look at life has resulted in the truest music she has released to date. Crystal has drawn on her various influences —  across folk-pop\, classic rock\, soul\, blues and country — to make the kind of music that resonates with her spirit. DESCRIPTION:“I ain’t got no f*cking other plan\,” says the legendary Bettye LaVette. She’s talking about her 61-year storied career\, beginning in 1960’s Detroit\, with a resurgence in the mid-2000’s. For her latest LP\, simply titled LaVette! (June 16)\, she teamed once again with producer Steve Jordan for a special release on Jay-Vee Records\, the label founded by Jordan and Meegan Voss. An interpreter without peer\, Bettye chose to record an album of songs written by Randall Bramblett. “I think he’s the best songwriter I’ve heard in the past 30 years\,” says LaVette\, “and I just discovered him eight years ago.”  \n“Bettye LaVette is like a combination of Frank Sinatra\, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis\,” says Jordan. “When I prepare a band for her\, I make sure we have it together. When she joins us\, we’re only gonna get one or two takes\, because she puts her heart and soul into each performance.” The late\, great George Jones\, called her “a singer’s singer”.  \nBorn in Muskegon\, Michigan\, Bettye’s parents\, Louisiana migrants\, ran a club out of their home. They sold corn liquor and chicken sandwiches and spun records for the Black auto-parts workers and traveling gospel groups who didn’t have a hangout to kick back in and call their own. She was a toddler\, listening in on old folks’ business; learning old folks’ ways. Some of that was conversation\, observing the interactions\, the repartee; some of it was the 78s that spun on the family’s jukebox — a trove of blues\, gospel\, country & western\, and the latest R&B that filtered through AM radio playlists.  \n“When Bettye gets a hold of a song\, it becomes her song\,” Jordan explains. “It’s like she wrote it. She’s a great messenger\, a communicator\, an interpreter.  \n“I’m very happy with what we’ve done\,” Bettye adds. “It is very\, very difficult to please an old woman\, but I’m nearly excited.”  \nShe is a six-time Grammy nominee\, has received a Pioneer Award from The Rhythm & Blues Foundation\, has won several Blues Music Awards and has been inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame. DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s presents Andy Woodson’s Pawpaw Orchestra\, featuring Sydney McSweeney (vocals)\, Zakk Jones (guitar)\, Reggie Jackson (drums)\, Paul Strawser (keyboards)\, Kevin O’Neill (saxophone)\, and of course Andy Woodson on bass. They will perform some songs from Andy’s new album Pawpaw and some other psychedelic tunes from the 70s like Tower of Power\, War\, etc.  \nAndy Woodson is one of the most in-demand bassists in the central Ohio area and has been a vital part of the Columbus music scene since 1985. Andy was Lecturer of Jazz Bass at The Ohio State University from 2004-2018\, and has performed at the Montreux\, North Sea\, Saratoga\, and Newport Jazz Festivals and toured Sweden and Japan. \nSydney McSweeney is a vocalist from Columbus who at a young age developed a deep love of music. That love directed her to Otterbein University where she studied classical voice and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in music.  \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show.
