She does it with violins and synthesizers. The resulting songs from her new album Bitchcraft\, which came out on Kill Rock Stars February 4th\, 2022\, are heartbreaking\, spectral\, political and beautiful. Bitch is based in Los Angeles after living in New York for many years. She’s a longstanding queer music icon and “Bitchcraft” is her 9th studio album. \nBitch first achieved notoriety as one half of the queer folk duo Bitch & Animal. The band went on tour with Ani DiFranco\, whom they met while playing a gig at a pizza shop in Provincetown. In the mid 2000s\, Bitch went solo\, and shared stages with the Indigo Girls\, acted in John Cameron Mitchell’s film Shortbus\, co-wrote a song with Margaret Cho\, produced two albums of her elder folk hero Ferron\, and licensed some of her songs to The L Word. \n“Between her effervescent style and\, and the violin and synth-heavy music they’re known for\, Bitch sure is giving new meaning to the word.” – BUST \nCrys Matthews \n \nWebsite \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the  brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of  compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for  intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what  beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of  her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, Matthews hopes to take her  place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock  and Holly Near. Of Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest  emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart  and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/bitch-with-crys-matthews/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/BITCH_PromoA-scaled-1.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20231006T210000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20231006T210000 DTSTAMP:20240118T121428 CREATED:20230831T152935Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231004T233504Z UID:129448-1696626000-1696626000@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:Friday Night Jazz & Soul featuring Mary McClendon\, Vernon Hairston\, Dwight Bailey\, Ken Weaver and Jimmi Love - SOLD OUT DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Night of Jazz & Soul featuring vocal legend Mary McClendon\, backed by Vernon Hairston on piano\, Ken Weaver on guitar\, Jimmi Love on drums and Dwight Bailey on bass. However\, the show will go on and we still plan to celebrate her book and the work of John Prine. Alec Wightman\, who was otherwise going to be “in conversation” with Holly\, will share some interesting highlights from PRINE ON PRINE and Parker MacDonell (along with special guest Donna Mogavero) will perform some memorable John Prine songs as he originally planned. Gramercy Books will still be on hand to deliver previously ordered books and have some on hand for sale. Below see more details about this exciting event. \nThis literary and musical evening will celebrate Gleason’s book  Prine on Prine: Interviews and Encounters with John Prine! This carefully curated set of interviews is a near autobiography of one of our greatest songwriters.  \nPlease note that Prine on Prine can be purchased in advance along with tickets to the event\, as well as purchased directly from Gramercy Books in Bexley via this link: https://www.gramercybooksbexley.com/book/9781641606301. Gramercy Books will also be on site at Natalie’s to sell copies of PRINE ON PRINE.  \nPrine on Prine distills the essence of an iconic American writer: unguarded\, unfiltered\, and real. In his own words\, in his own time—on the road\, in the kitchen\, the Library of Congress\, radio shows\, movie scripts\, and beyond. John Prine hated giving interviews\, but he said much when he talked. Embarrassed by fame\, delighted by the smallest things\, the first songwriter to read at the Library of Congress\, and winner of the Pen Award for Literary Excellence\, Prine saw the world unlike anyone else.  \nThe songs from 1971’s John Prine remain spot-on takes of the human condition today\, and his writing only got richer\, funnier\, and more incisive. The interviews in Prine on Prine trace his career evolution\, his singular mind\, his enduring awareness of social issues\, and his acute love of life\, from Studs Terkel’s radio interviews from the early ’70s to Mike Leonard’s Today Show packages from the ’80s\, Cameron Crowe’s early encounter to RonniLundy’s Shuck Beans\, Stack Cake cookbook\, and Hot Rod magazine to No Depression’s cover story\, through today. \nEditor Holly Gleason enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Prine and his longtime co-manager\, and she often traveled with him on tours in the late 1980s and represented him in the 2000s. \nHolly Gleason is a music critic\, academic\, and artist development consultant. Her work has appeared in Rolling Stone\, Los Angeles Times\, New York Times\, Miami Herald\, Musician\, CREEM\, Oxford American\, and NPR Music. The 2019 Country Music Association Media Achievement Award recipient and a SOURCE Hall of Fame inductee\, she created and contributed to Woman Walk The Line: How the Women of Country Music Changed Our Lives\, the 2018 Belmont Book Award winner. She is also the coauthor of Miranda Lambert’s Y’all Eat Yet? She lives in Nashville\, Tennessee. \nAlec Wightman’s passion and knowledge of music\, particularly rock and roll\, runs long and deep\, as revealed in his 2021 memoir\, Music in My Life. By day\, Alec is a partner in the national law firm\, BakerHostetler. But during his free time\, his Zeppelin Productions\, Inc. promotes national act concerts at Natalie’s\, and he’s been doing that since 1995. He’s also a longtime member of the Board of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, where he served three years as Chair.  \nParker MacDonell has been using his original songs\, voice\, and acoustic guitar to communicate with audiences for years.  A veteran of the Los Angeles club scene and college student unions across the United States\, Parker has released four recordings: Miracle on Broad Street with Matt Munhall (2017)\, The Present Tense (2012)\, Looking For You (1985)\, and Home to the Heart (1983).  His two recent recordings are available on Spotify and Apple Music. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the event. The band\, who cut their teeth playing the oyster bars and listening rooms of the Florida Panhandle\, has since written and released two full-length albums: their studio debut Follow (2014)\, called “eye-opening\, but warmly familiar” by Earmilk\, and whose title track is “one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard” (Todd Moe of NCPR); and sophomore effort West of Here (2016)\, with its “tight-as-a-rubber-band” harmonies and “infectious” songwriting (PopMatters). \nFor their third album\, This Side of the Glass (2019)\, The Currys teamed up with producer/guitarist Sam Whedon and engineer Stewart Myers (Jason Mraz\, Parachute) to map new terrain. As ever\, the band’s three-part family harmonies provide the organic\, lived-in feel of roots music\, but the album aspires to a greater variety of form and orchestration than earlier releases. The songs defy any neat categorization: the country nostalgia of “Gulf Coast Home” complements the folk-pop sensibility of “Pin You Down\,” while the guitars and gang vocals of “Soon Enough” pay unmistakable homage to Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” \nLyrically\, This Side of the Glass explores questions of perspective\, an apt consideration for a band featuring three songwriters. Each Curry offers his take on the time-worn threads of life and love\, contributing to the album’s tapestry of introspection and social commentary. Likewise\, each in turn ruminates on the paradox faced by every performing songwriter: how to balance one’s roles as both the author of stories and the object of storytelling. This Side of the Glass is an insightful and satisfying new chapter from a band with many more stories to tell. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/the-currys/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Curryspromo1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20231013T210000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20231013T210000 DTSTAMP:20240118T121428 CREATED:20230705T193603Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230705T193603Z UID:128930-1697230800-1697230800@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks DESCRIPTION:Webb Wilder & the Beatnecks return to Natalie’s for a great evening of music! It all keeps coming around. You carry on\, intent on flourishing and thriving. This is what Damn Tall Buildings sings about\, what they seek to share with their audience. \nIn their early days\, Damn Tall Buildings didn’t rehearse – they busked. Now\, whether live or on record\, the trio still radiates the energy of a crew of best friends playing bluegrass on the street. Anchoring that energy is their instrumental chops\, their strong songwriting\, and their varied influences that stretch beyond bluegrass\, even beyond American roots music altogether. Whether sharing lead vocals and instrumental solos or blending their voices into high-spirited harmony\, Damn Tall Buildings is a tight unit that contains more than the sum of its parts. \nPrimary vocalist and lyricist Max Capistran’s singing recalls old blues and The Band-style roots-rock\, whereas Sasha Dubyk’s time studying musical theater is evident in her rich vocal tone and soulful flair. Avery Ballotta’s fiddle brings stratospheric dimension to the churning rhythm section of Capistran’s guitar and Dubyk’s bass. The band’s harmony singing is tight without being too slick – they sound like three individual voices joined together in celebration\, not a perfectly polished machine. Their choruses are the kind you sing along to with a glass raised into the air. \nThey carry with them a connective spirit\, welcoming audiences to join in the moment with the band as they take us on a journey through a well-crafted show. The trio has a knack for making any room feel a little more like home. \n…The Carter Family for the millennial generation……” – The Boston Globe \n“If you like your bluegrass served with a little punch\, attitude\, grit and gravy … Damn Tall Buildings will slide in nice as a welcome edition to your listening rotation. Bluegrass at heart\, but pulling from a wide range of influences including swing\, ragtime\, jazz\, and even a hint of contemporary perspective in the songwriting\, they offer virtually unmatched energy and enthusiasm\, underpinned by intelligent songs that don’t skimp on the infectiousness…” – Savingcountrymusic.com \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. A successful solo artist\, collaborator\, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson\, John Prine\, Emmylou Harris\, and many more)\, Kieran is a musician’s musician: his playing is always understated\, always groove-oriented\, and always serving the song.\n\nIf Rayna Gellert seems a preternaturally gifted songwriter\, it’s because she’s seen farther into the old songs than most. Growing up in a musical family\, she turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age\, becoming a prodigious fiddler and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. An in-demand collaborator\, she has toured and recorded with artists such as Scott Miller\, Abigail Washburn\, Toubab Krewe\, and Robyn Hitchcock.\n\nKieran and Rayna first met\, fittingly\, at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, which led to their cowriting songs for Kieran’s solo album Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning). They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release\, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records)\, which they also co-produced. Their first duo album\, The Ledges\, was released in February of 2018 on Dead Reckoning Records\, followed up quickly by 2019’s When the Sun Goes Down. \nNow\, in 2022\, this “unlikely musical couple” have released The Flowers That Bloom in Spring\, which finds the duo digging deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and recording. \nFans of either artist will recognize the musical kindred-spiritedness in their restrained and roots-oriented approach to both songs and arrangements. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. DESCRIPTION:Tommy Prine’s debut album “This Far South” coming June 23\, 2023 is not only a long awaited introduction but a testimony to Prine’s 20’s and the loss\, love\, and growth that has defined them. Co-produced by close friend and kindred musical spirit\, Ruston Kelly\, and beloved Nashville engineer and producer\, Gena Johnson\, the album is rich and dynamic from cathartic jams to nostalgic storytelling.\n\nThe son of late songwriting legend\, John Prine\, Tommy Prine grew up in Nashville surrounded by music\, art and writing. As a child\, he thought all parents were musicians\, as his father “going to work” meant performing shows for adoring fans and writing songs. Tommy learned to play guitar by watching his father play\, copying the ways his fingers moved and inadvertently developing his own singular style. Summers in Ireland lent their own inspiration\, as did 10 straight years camping at Bonnaroo. Prine’s musical tastes grew to become decidedly eclectic\, spanning John Mayer\, Outkast\, Bon Iver\, the Strokes and more.\n\nIt wasn’t until Prine reached his mid-twenties\, though\, that he considered a career of his own in music and began to share with others the songs he wrote in private. His songs were quickly met with excitement and enthusiasm\, which sonically brings together a colorful patchwork of musical influences and lyrically explores existential questions and emotional experiences. \nThe album’s title track\, “This Far South\,” marks a turning point in Prine’s life as he found himself struggling to escape a dark\, aimless period. He ultimately found the courage to act on choices that would see him to the other\, brighter\, side. \n\nJordan Smart \nWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | Spotify \nJordan Smart is a singer-songwriter currently based in Ludlow\, KY. His songs echo between the prominent fingerpicking patterns of John Fahey and the Dylanesque vocal style of The Tallest Man on Earth. He flows with the current of the folk revival movement\, which continues to course through the mainstream and underground channels today. But below the superficial labels lay the heart of the matter that distinguishes Smart from the bulk of other aspiring folk musicians. \nSmart\, 31\, is a father. He grew up with humble beginnings\, hitchhiked across the United States and slept under bridges. His life flashed before his eyes on a few occasions\, but lived to tell the tale by the grace of good luck. Smart even found himself as a musical guest for Bernie Sanders during his presidential race in 2016. Through it all\, Smart offers a remarkable level of sincerity and clarity that is few and far between. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Replete with masterful hooks\, his music\, all of which he produces himself\, glows with a sonic warmth and intimacy reminiscent of Paul McCartney and Dr. Dog\, while his writing and delivery reveal years under the influence of Beck\, Appalachia\, and Andrew Bird. \nHebdo’s defiance of simple categorization is perhaps best exemplified in the concoction of his own genre\, dubbed “Adventure-Folk”. The moniker suits not only his adventurous spirit and the physical terrain he’s charted in his artistic journey\, from Lebanese roots to longtime residencies in Appalachia and tours across Italy\, but also the vast musical territory covered in the four EPs and three LPs he has released to date. The constant threads in his music are unshakeable choruses\, the welcoming croon of his wholesome layered vocals\, and plucks of his acoustic guitar. \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n  URL:https://nataliesgrandview.com/events/hebdo-2/ LOCATION:Natalie’s Grandview – Charlie’s Stage\, 945 King Avenue\, Columbus\, OH\, 43212\, United States CATEGORIES:Charlie’s Stage ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://nataliesgrandview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Hebdo-credit-Jeri-Shaffer-.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20231116T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20231116T200000 DTSTAMP:20240118T121428 CREATED:20230913T215047Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231116T210616Z UID:129613-1700164800-1700164800@nataliesgrandview.com SUMMARY:6 Degrees of Dub - CANCELED DESCRIPTION:Due to current circumstances beyond our control\, this show has been canceled.
